147 grain 9mm

Having done a little bit of research, I'm thinking about carrying 147 grain ammunition in my G19 for self defense purposes. I'm probably going with federal HST. Does anyone know of a good fmj round to practice with that would shoot to the same point of aim as this loading? Also if anyone has any good reasons as to why a different load should be considered, please feel free to chime in.

At 1st I read "defense round" my mind clicked.. hollow point.. then was troubling over finding such a heavy hollow point. I re read..

so... why FMJ in a defense round?

Despite the misguided, yet currently popular trend toward "super-heavy" slugs for a given caliber, I would not choose 147 grain for any 9mm unless it has at least 6" of barrel...which leaves out all handguns.

A 115 grain +P+ domestically loaded 9mm can deliver 500 lb-ft of KE (American ammo is underloaded, so +P is just barely reaching Euro standards). This is right in the ball park with most .357 Magnum 125 grain loads when fired from short barrel revolvers.

The KEY of course is to use a bullet that takes advantage of what high velocity cartridges "do" which unfortunately is NOT what domestic ammo makers choose to do.

 

All handguns are relatively poor "stoppers", regardless of caliber or bullet used. Shot placement and sufficient penetration are paramount, all else is secondary. We want expansion but we *need* sufficient penetration.

147gr HST is one of the best 9mm loads that has both good expansion and sufficient penetration, regardless of bbl length (heavier bullets show less performance loss w/shorter bbls w/o resorting to +P/+P+ pressure/recoil/muzzle blast).

Under stress, fine motor control goes out the window so any good 147gr FMJ load should provide the same recoil impulse and similar POI as 147gr HST at reasonable SD distances.

I would gladly carry 147gr HST but prefer Hornady's 135gr Critical Duty (std pressure for faster followup shots) in all my 9mm's as it provides deeper penetration (you can't get something for nothing so it sacrifices expansion for increased penetration). The sealed primer pocket, crimped cannelure and anti-flash powder are just icing on the cake.

ETA: I find the recoil of 135's/147's to have more push but less muzzle rise.

I have some of those Federal American Eagle 147 grain FMJs, I'd like to get more but it's a little expensive for 9mm. I can shoot my Glock 17 and my CZ 75B to POA with this factory ammo.

 

My LGS sells AE 147gr FMJ for the same price as any of the other 115 or 124gr target ammo, $19.99 for 50.

I only load 147gr for my 9mm, both in target and SD loadings.

 

There is a guy on youtube that goes by Shooting the bull 410 that is in the process right now of doing some of the best gelatin and gelatin with heavy denim testing I have yet seen.
He just finished a long and exhaustive testing on the .380 caliber using a small Taurus TCP.
He is doing the 9mm testing using a Sig 938.
I specifically asked him about testing the standard pressure 147 grain HST because I carry it in my PM9 and his reply was that it was coming up soon to be tested.
Luckily for me I also have three full boxes of HST in standard pressure 124 grain which did absolutely fantastic in the test medium.

 

I don't carry a 9mm, but if I did it'd be with 147gr ammo. YMMV.

 

I agree that 147 gr is what you want in 9mm. Pistol rounds are slow and heavy, so they might as well be slow and heavy.

 

I like Black Hills 124 gr JHP+P and buy it whenever I can find it.

 

If you can find your 147gr JHP defensive ammo, I'd handload 147gr FMJ practice ammo to match the velocities you're seeing (and if the weight and velocity are the same, the POI will be too).

 

I practice with 147gr Lawman TMJ because they are so close to 147gr Winchester Ranger "T" - RA9T as far as muzzle velocity.

I have carried +P 124 grain Golden saber JHP for a long time. I used to carry Winchester Black Talons, but with a the hoopla surrounding the round at the time I moved on to the Remington. Another reasonable choice would be the Speer Gold Dot124 grain +P JHP. A couple of my 9mm's recommend not using 147 grain fodder. That works for me. I find the two above mentioned JHP's to be more really obtainable. Besides, if you want to go beyond the average 9mm round you should step into the S&W 40, or go to .45ACP. You can get the S&W 40 in a 180 grain JHP if you so desire.

 

SG Ammo gives excellent service, order with confidence. There's lots of good SD ammo out there, I stick with 9mm as it shoots better than .40 IME and is usually cheaper. I've always found Winchester Ranger the best buy in top shelf defensive ammo. 50 round boxes rather than 20 for most of the competition, I've bought good HP defensive ammo for less than the .45 ball I used to shoot oftentimes prior to the panic.

 

I haven't used their 9mm ammo, but I've shot a lot of Georgia Arms ammo in .45Auto. It works great.

I carry a P99 which has a 4" barrel like your G19. I carry Federal 147gr HST in it with full confidence. Can't remember which ones now, but several Police agencies have been satisfied with it's results.

Before I started reloading, I loved the Federal American Eagle 147gr FMJ with flat points. tipoc referenced it with one of the links. I've used a chronograph on it but don't have the results with me. I think it gave lower velocities thant the HST, but for practical purposes, you should be happy with it or most of the other 147 gr practice loads.

Federal also makes HST in 147gr +p, but from what I've seen it doesn't offer anything extra in expansion or penetration over the non +p 147gr.
