FWIW, here's what my Chrony sees using Portugese surplus:

Rem700, 22" barrel: 2750fps, give or take.

CETME, 17" barrel plus century muzzle brake: 2550fps, give or take.

So I lose 200fps going from 22" to 17".

Yeah

And in the article i mentioned, the 155gr TAP for example lost about 300fps from a longer bbl to a short 16 incher:

it was 2849 fps from a 22 ( I think, maybe it was 24") inch barrel ,
2623 from and 18" bbl (per Hornady website),
and 2549fps from the 16.25" bbl in the article.
Still ought to put the hurt to anyhting you wanted, though!

You guys are making it tough. Not decided, yet. We'll have to see, I suppose. I've got two months yet to bat this around.

Ease of handling vs. a couple hundred feet per second in muzzle velocity? Tough one...

Any word on the bipod? How does one mount a Harris bipod to FAL handguards?

This is my 16 inch carbine. By the way, this is one of Meeper's quick change set ups. Not bad for a 7-ish pound 308 rifle, huh?

Socom 16

I've got a Springfield M1A SOCOM 16. First time, out of the box bench rest at 50 yards. Using a 100 yard Sighting In target. Placed 11 of 15 shots in the 9 ring, 2 in the 10 ring, and 3 in the 8 ring. Using Military surplus 147 grain FMJ South African ammo. Only rifle I've shot better with is my Colt Target Match Competition HBARII AR-15 at 100 yards.

I got a 16" fal carbine from orf.blast doesnt seem a big issue,it shoots just fine.Id let you shoot it nightcrawler if you were here in ohio.theres nothing fancy about it.

Im not overly concerned with loss of velocity and all that jazz, its a battle rifle,no fancy barrel,no optics, just plain ol post and I shoot it at ranges in the 100 yard window anyways..I would consider an bolt action with optics that I can squeeze maximum accuracy out of to need the longer barrel, but for a fal, what it does, it does it well.
