I looking to load 165 grain btsp for my 721b Remington (custom lefty) with a
20" barrel. Hoping for 2700fps-+100 and a good group.

Any pet loads for short barrel 30.06?

Powder suggestion?

Thanks

Looking at the Hodgdon Reloading Data Center here: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp, virtually every powder they list for 165 grain loads develops between the mid-2700s and mid-2900s for velocity. Figure they probably used a 26" test barrel (or longer), so I would pick one of the powders that developed the highest velocity and see how my rifle likes it.

Start with the minimum load and work up carefully as pressure signs and velocity indicate.

Personally I usually worry more about accuracy and consistency than velocity, except for a few specific applications where velocity is slightly more important.

In my 17" 30-06, I get just over 2500 with 51 gr IMR4895 and a Federal GM210M pushing a Hornady 165 grain boat tail with an OAL of 3.28 in Win brass.
This load is very accurate and repeatable in my rifle.
You should get close to 2700 in a 20" barrel.

This particular bullet expands quickly on deer and puts them down fast.
I have never had one fail to leave a large exit wound.

Start around 47-48 grains and work up carefully !

(I would not use a load this hot in my Garand.)

Have fun and be safe.

165 grn load for 20" bbl. in 30-06

I have a 22" bbl on my Mauser and after several test loads I settled on 50.0 gr. of IMR 4064 behind a Sierra 165 gr. BTSP Gameking using once fired Rem. cases neck sized only with a Lee collet die, Federal 210M primers and am getting near match accuracy at 2865 fps . This gun shoots lots of ammo well but this one really stands out. This load is at max per some data and others show up to 52 gr. as the max. I measure all of my brass before and after firing when working up my initial loads and am not getting any pressure signs to speak of at all . As a precaution use the wise old addage of reducing these loads by 10% and work up in .5 gr. incriments to find the sweet spot. P.S., by once fired cases do note they have to have been fired in the weapon you are currently loading for or you will find yourself wasting time and matierials as well as putting your safety at risk. Be mindful as well the brass should all be trimmed to a uniform length after neck sizing per your loading manual. Hope this helps and you get that sweetheart load as well . 10 Spot

Any of the medium-medium slow powders will give you what you want, and more. I would recommend Hodgden's Varget because it is so versatile and less ambient-temperature sensitive than most other powders. It should work well in your shorter barrel.

I am not really as stuck on magic fps numbers as it may sound. I really like this gun. Its balance is near perfect for me The 721b Mated with a Leupold 2X7 it's near clone of the rifle I shot my first deer with. A 98 Mauser with a 20" barrel and 2X7 Tasco.
Its main duty is as a backup to every other gun in my gun safe. 375 H&H, 300 Win Mag, 308 tactile, 7X57, 45-70, 22-250.

It is the gun that I take if it is the last day of the season.....

Not bad for A gun bought at auction for $185.

Thanks for the input

Took the words right outa my keyboard, just in my case sub Sierra with Hornady BTSP; Fed 210M with CCI 200.
