I have been out of the BP loop for around 15 years and I was thinking about getting back in with an 1851 Navy. Anyway I was looking around at some different brands and of course I was looking hard at the ones in Cabela's because they are so much cheaper than most others.

I have a friend that told me he ordered on several years ago and in less than 50rnds it "fell apart all the guts just fell out." He actually offered to give me the gun, but I'm unsure if I could find quality parts and he said it had been beaten up pretty bad over the years. I have also read the reviews on the Cabelas site, they seem to positive but some negative feedback is in there, and I don't really trust them anyway because I believe most people write the reviews after only a little shooting.

So my basic question is are they of good quality or should I save up for a better one.

By the way, what happened to the Uberti's? In 2003 1851's were $219 now they are over $500, has 2003 been that long?

Pietta has come a long way in their quality of their products & I would buy another one today if I was in the market & $$$ were in my pocket, I have 3 Piettas & so far have had reat service with each of them.

Now with that said, if it is a brass framed revolver, although they are good pieces you must realize that you can not load them to full power as you could a steel framed one because over time the brass if subjected to the heavy loads can stretch & be damaged, but if you keep the loads relatively moderate "say 24gr. FFFG max" then those brass framed revolvers will last you a life time & shoot admirably..

At over $500 you are probably looking at 2nd and 3rd gen Colts. The Italian guns are much less money. Check Gunbroker.com and you well see what's on the market. Last year I found a 1969 Uberti made, Navy Arms 51 civilian model for $99. It's been an excellent shooter. Quality can be hit or miss with all brands, Colt included.

Where have you seen Uberti 1851s for over $500? According to Uberti's website, the MSRP is $329. Most dealers will price them about $280 - $300.

I wish I could answer your question about Cabelas C&B guns, but I have no experience with them. But I have heard from several people that Pietta's quality has improved significantly over the past few years.

Most of the Uberti 1851 navys I've come across are around $275 to $300, you can get a Uberti Walker for around $400 at Cabelas. The steel frame Pietta Navy that Cabelas sells is a decent gun for $200. I like to buy in person if possible and examine the gun very well, I find the quality of the same model varies some. One thing about Cabelas I like is their excellent return policy, you don't like it send it back for replacement or refund, your choice. None of the repro percussion revolvers are as robust as a Ruger Old Army percussion revolver in my openion and will take a little work to keep running smoothly. Their not as bad as some would have you believe though. Given proper care and reasonable loading their a lot of fun.

I think mine is great. It can take some work to keep that brass clean and shining. Lot's of fun. Almost no recoil. My 8yo nephew handles it like a champ..."let's shoot your old cowboy gun again".

I have some

:Dand they are pretty nice , I vote yes on Pietta , no on Cabelas .
Given a choice I would buy from Dxie Gun Works . Not only is there return policy exceptional as is Cabelas , they have an on-sight gunsmith , for free on your purchase if you have any problems . I also think they watch there guns going out the door MUCH better than Cabelas does .
I just bought these two a few months ago at $225 each , silver plated backstraps , in the corrrect .36 caliber. You cannot go wrong , and they are flawless in finish and function right out of the box . Even have good trigger pulls , who'd of thunk it ! :)
There is a little box in the order window on your on-line purchase . Put "Please MAKE SURE this gun is perfect before you send it to me " and they will ! :D You can even have there gunsmith give it the once over too to realy make sure its a good one , for free , before they ship to you . :D How can you lose on that ! :D
I have bought MANY from both companys , but no longer use the other , Why would I ?

I usually buy used guns but the new guns that I bought, that needed work, went directly to Traditions (Pietta) or Taylors (Uberti). They will fix, repair or replace for a year (they both keep track of the serial numbers of the guns they sell). Both have sent me new parts (triggers, hammers, bolt springs, etc) at no charge. I'd rather fix minor problems with a BP gun then send it back and get a new one with new minor problems.

Pre-she-ate you fellas. That's really how I feel about all that garbage......

DeepSouth, really, go get one, you won't be disappointed. The starter kit is kind of cheesey (mainly the powder flask, junk), but it will get you going. The revolver is great. I've recommended it to several friends as a first BP. After seeing and shooting mine, they were sold.

Oh and mine likes #10 Remmington caps, even though I was told #11.

You mean this one !

Yeh they are SWEET with a capital SWEEEEEEET :D
Yup, Cabelas is the only place to get them too , and they are in the RIGHT caliber too .36 ..........
I in the whited my frame , can't see the engraving worth a crap without it this way , fore warning . This is one of Piettas better models for sure .
I inlayed real Colt Medallions too in grip . The grips are very nice , heavy synthetic , real heavy , nice handlin gun here , you need to just buy this one , you won't be disapointed whatsoever . Buy it , and if you don't like it I will buy it from you thats how confident I am . :D

One of my real true loves here , I really like this gun allot , its beautiful too :

I have an .44 1851 Colt Navy clone that I got at Bass Pro Shop. Came in a "kit" for about $200 on sale. Certainly made in Italy, but the maker's name escapes me. Pietta sounds familar though. Anyway, I've had it out shooting a few times, and I've NEVER seen where the damn balls are hitting. Needless to say, I'm not impressed with it.

I thought BP pistol shooting would be oh-so-cool, but I kinda like to see some results once in awhile. And this was shooting off of various rests, taking careful aim and squeezing very slowly. NEVER hit what I was aiming for, NEVER seen a hole in the paper at all. And the way the percussion cap fragments jam up the cylinder, makes me wonder how many people died or were wounded because of their revolver locking up from cap fragments.

So, it doesn't get to go play with the other kids when we go shootin'. It's purty though.

If you score the one like Jaeger's and don't like it I'll buy it from you, no B.S. I've been looking for a new BP anyway.....and I like that one. Just don't tell my wife!!!!

I just bought a Pietta '51 Navy, it is 36 cal with the 5 1/2" barrel. It is my new favorite gun. Fit and finish is great, I can't wait to shoot it.

AussieTH

I have had this one a few years , I would say three or four years ?
I paid $279 U.S.A money without shipping I believe . I would pay up to $350 for it now after owning one , no problem there . :D

Where you been buddy ?
