Have been looking at 1851 Navy revolvers. While I prefer to stay with Uberti I have also checked out cimmaron's website as well ( I guess they sell thru Texas Jacks). Has anyone ever had a Cimmaron '51 Navy? They are made by Uberti correct? Are they that much nicer than Ubertis as far as fit and finish? I can get a Uberti thru Buffalo Arms for around $270 where as the Cimmaron is about $315. What is the big difference between the two? Only other problem is deciding between the oval or squareback trigger guard :D :D

I don't think there's $45 dollars of difference in quality, it could be the wholesale price originally paid, or the company overhead.... The squareback triggerguard is smaller in size than the oval (or should be if it's authentic in detail). My second gen Colt 51 has the smallest squareback triggerguard representing the first model Colts. (parts were made by Uberti), I can't get my thumb through it sideways. The Uberti brand squarebacks have a larger triggerguard, the Second Model model Colt, the last squarebacks, although I don't see reference to the original Colt second model being larger than the first model. My thumb will go through, touching the top and bottom and the round ithird model is about the same. The largest round guard is the Fourth Model and the steel guard on the London and the 61 Navy 4-screw, where I can put my thumb through without touching metal, this is also the size of the ring on the 1860 and the SAA. This is more information than you asked for. If you have fat fingers. the Colt 2nd gen squareback probably won't work for you. The regular Uberti square and round guards will be OK, though they are a bit smaller than the SAA.

The squareback is prettier, even though the squareback had nor practical purpose other than the preference of the Army Ordnance officer Col. Talcot. At the point where Col. Talcot was convicted in a Court Marshal and replaced, Colt immediately changed the triggerguards to round.

Uberti supplied the barrels and cylinders only on the 2nd gen 51's. I agree on the Dragoon trigger guard. It is small and can be uncomfortable if you have average to large hands. I have two Dragoon and one round guard 2nd gen 51's, the round guard is much more comfortable to shoot but not nearly as cool looking.

Texas Jack is an Internet outlet that belongs to Cimmaron. In both cases they're Colt reproductions are made by Uberti. It is claimed that Cimmaron branded guns are more expensive then some others because they pay the manufacturer more to do additional hand fitting. They are also a first-class outfit to deal with if you have a problem. Texas Jack revolvers sold directly to consumers (where it's legal to do so) are less expensive, but may or may not have the extra work.

The prices listed on the Cimmaron website are suggested retail. As dealers can buy for less you might see if someone in your area with an FFL might be able to come close in matching the Texas Jack price.

Over time I have owned several Cimarron revolvers, both C&B and metallic cartridge. In all cases I have been satisfied. In 1851 Navy models I prefer the London model with an iron backstrap and trigger guard - simply because it is unnecessay to keep polishing brass all the time. Brass is fine if you don't see this as a problem. I would never buy a square-back if my intention was to shoot the gun.

Would the square back '51 Navy be any different than shooting the Walker??

Yes, in that the Walker has a larger handle and a bigger trigger guard. Think of the Navy as being a down-sized Walker (which it is).

Texas Jacks is, as OF said, the retail arm of Cimarron. The prices for 'regular' guns listed on the TJ site are for regular Ubertis, not Cimarron rollmarked.

The Cimarron prices are 'retail'. If you want a Cimarron, go to Buffalo Arms, where you will find Cimarron-marked guns at regular Uberti prices.

I was thinking of going with teh squareback triggerguard just because it looks like a Walker junior :)

I am actually waiting on a good friend of mine to make a decision whether or not he wants to sell his original Londoan Navy. Its a numbers matching revolver and in pretty good shape as well. Another one of those I would love to have it deals :D

I am looking at a 1851 Navy purchases, too. I talked to Buffalo Arms and they say their guns are from Cimarron. The owner of Buffalo Arms sells them at a price just over what he pays for them. I also have bought a Uberti 3rd Model Dragoon for the listed catalogue price of $321.00 at S & S FireArms 2 months ago. The Navy Colts are listed as $256.00 for the 1851 and $266.00 for the 1861. They use Taylor's & Co. for their supplier and I am quite pleased with the service I received from S & S.

Yup Tommygun

Yup , Pietta makes all kinds of fun guns , many many many non-Hysterical accurate ones too . I think Uberti tries to keep things a bit more real , but WHO CARES , there Italian , how Hystericaly accurate is that anyway , LOL !
Pietta started producing the right caliber 51's Cilvilians last year , Dixie is the only place to get them . I can tell ya too , they are SMOOTH , nicely finished inside and out .
Thanks for the gun comments too , appreciate that , fun stuff shootin and buiilding these Reporoductions into fine shooters .
