1858 Pietta Sheriffs Model

Yeah I have about 100 cci#10 caps and nothing that shoots them. Was thinking about grinding down a nipple and putting it on the philly derringer so it will take CCI 10s until I shoot them all up then replace it with a standard nipple.

Well, I just bought the conversion cylinder for my new gun from Taylors. Their web site was a pain to order from. Didn't even think the order went through until I went to my e mail. I'm not sure how much I'm going to use the CC but in today's political climate why not. I still have some cowboy loads from when I shot SASS. I'll have to shoot them and reload a little heavier than " seeing the bullet go down range".

I have a CC for my 1858. I like it, cool to be able to put 45 colt in and shoot or use loose powder if you want.

Yeah their online ordering process is archaic for sure. They take a good while to ship also. Expect some nebulous emails about "invoice" etc. They shipped in a priority mail box stuffed with shredded paper FYI.

250 grain pills at ~850 are nothing to sneeze at, IMO. They thump!

Now, two days latter, they say their out of the gun I wanted. I can't believe it. Well, at least I have the CC coming from Taylors, I think. Maybe I'll just cut down the regular barrel, engraved, 1858 I have. I'm tired of looking for the sheriffs model. Seems like everyone is out. Matter of fact, most places are out of almost all the BP revolvers. Never thought I'd see the day BP revolvers were hard to get. I can save 400$ doing the chop job. Now, anyone know of a shoulder rig where the guns pointed down ? I have one for my Remington 1911, but the wife won't let me wear it because every time I walk away it's pointed at her. Hmmm, I didn't think it was a bad thing.

I didn't see this thread last month, but I have one and I can't say it's much different than the 8 inch. I'd say its advantage is if you do a conversion and shoot smokeless the Sheriff makes more sense, you don't the extra 2.5 inches of barrel. I haven't shot any black powder from mine, don't really plan to. I don't carry either of them, but with the 5.5" barrel and near 40 oz loaded I cannot imagine it's a dream to carry over the 8 inch and with the 8 inch you can get it with "target" sights and I cannot imagine those sights would make it shoot anything but excellent.

Bottom line if you really want a Sheriff NMA, get it.

My dad had something like this when he was shooting CAS matches. Sorry to swipe a pic from the interent, but I can't find a brand / supplier with a quickie search:
Fast Draw Rig.jpeg

It's an open-ish design with a leather-wrapped spring steel "clip" to hold the revolver in place. You kinda lever it out of the clip. It seemed to retain well, but the usual muzzle-consciousness of cross-drawing applied.

I had something like that. I used an Exacto knife to slit the side of CCIs to fit .

The nipples on the Sheriffs model I just bought are sized for #10 caps. I don't own a single #10 cap but have several thousand #11 caps. So I ordered new nipples from TOW that use #11 caps. They may be closed because of the weather. I have never gotten an email from them telling me my order was received or had been sent. Oh well. Its too cold to shoot anyway.

I spoke to a manger there at length yesterday, placed an order for what was there last of the model I wanted. He explained their shelves are all but bare. Even though some the guns listed at the site don't show it they may be already gone. " We're sellimg out of almost everything with no line on when a restock may happen. " He cited the run on cartridge firing guns ( and ammo) as a major contributor for the lack of percussion guns as well. In time I think we'll see all of the online purveyors simply out of stock.

Very nice! That one also has a fluted cylinder.
Jedediah Starr must really stock up when they order guns so they won't sell out for a while.

I don't think the run-on-guns is a big factor in the shortage of cap-n-ball. If I recall correctly, the Italians were hardest hit at the beginning of the Chicom19 panic-demic, and they had a lot of serious shutdowns, stay at homes, etc. I would guess that they had a pretty serious manufacturing slowdown, and may still be severely limited on how many employees they can...employ, and what they can produce.

I agree with you. But I believe all of the factors are at play here, simultaneously.

I would love to find this holster somewhere.

Are they actually in stock?

That gun was reported to not be in stock even though the website cart indicated that it was in stock.
Another poster said that they're just about all sold out of guns.
You never know what or when they will get something in stock.
Perhaps call them for the latest update.

Articap,
Something tells me you may know the answer to this; do you think the retaining clip on a skeleton-type shoulder would work with c&b revolver cylinders like the 1860 Army ? Or is there that much difference between the diameter of a SAA cylinder and an 1860 Army cylinder ? My plan would be to order one of these to use with a short-barreled 1860.

I found a thread listing some cylinder dimensions that are all fairly close.
The dimensions compared some Colt SAA's and USFA SAA's.

The first post states:
On the webpage shown below, it is listed as 1.674" for USFA, and 1.652" for Colt.
------------------
Another post states:
I do have a 3rd Gen. Colt SAA that was built in 1997, and I compared the cylinders. The USFA Ainsworth cylinder measured 1.650", and the Colt cylinder measured slightly larger at 1.653" if I recall.
-----------------
And another post states:

According to Jerry Kuhnhausen's Colt Shop Manual;

Colt's 1st & 2nd Gen. Cylinders may vary from a low of 1.645" to a high of 1.654", with the avearge being 1.650".
1.650" was also the ordnance spec, with 1.645" to 1.654" being the allowable variation for commercial guns.

Colt's 3rd Gen. cylinders should measure 1.650" +/-.

Colt's Cowboy cylinder measurement averages 1.672".

He also states that 1.67" to 1.676"seems to be the average for replica Colts.

All of my Inspector Series guns averaged 1.672", and my Old Armory Original measures 1.650". I suspect since the tooling for cylinders to be in the 1.650" measurement for the Old Armory Original, those sized cyliders are available for use in other guns. The long trench ending in a "V" notch seems to be normal for all of my Black Powder framed guns. However, if yours is different from that yet, one way to check if yours is an Old Armory frame is to measure the frame window. My understanding is that the Old Armory's frame window is smaller than the original SAA's made by USFA.

-----------------------------------

There's more info. in the thread, and that was only the first Google search result that I entered into the search box that you can repeat to see more results ---->>> diameter of a Colt SAA cylinder
You should ask El Paso Saddlery about their return policy just in case it doesn't fit & function well.
If your gun is an open top that could make a difference that you can ask them about before ordering.
IDK if not having a frame window or top strap will matter or not.
I would try to be optimistic and ask them some questions if you can, or else you'll never find out if it will work or not.

The nipples I ordered came a day early. I installed them and they were just perfect for CCI caps. They are a very tight fit. The Remington caps are still a little loose and will fall off if not pinched a little first. The CCIs are so tight I had to remove the nipple and use a knife to remove the cap. Thats what I was looking for. A good tight fit.
