I trust my 58 with 40gr under a round ball just as much as my modern semi-autos. I know how to load it right, and I KNOW it's gonna fire when I pull the trigger.

Eagle24, there's a thread either here or on The Firing Line where Beartracker (Remington Kid over there) shows how he loads 40 grains, a felt wad and a ball, too!

I've read the thread but don't remember exactly what type wad he was using. I tried using 40gr and a felt wad and definitely had to compress the charge to get the ball seated deep enough for the cylinder to rotate.

Eagle,
I can't remember, are you using goex?

Yes, Goex FFFG.

I can set my measure to what I would estimate to be about 37gr of Goex fffg and use a wad over the powder without having to compress the powder when seating the ball, but that is about it. 40gr ffg with a felt wad and the ball is sticking out of the chamber about the thickness of the wad. I rammed it on in and fired it but I felt like I was compressing the charge more than I needed to.

I would like to know more about the affect of compressing a charge of black powder. Does it create a dangerous increase in pressure or is it more to do with causing inconsistent pressures and poor accuracy?

As far as I know, there's no harm in compressing BP. I've compressed some loads pretty hard and no ill effects. Now 777 gets squirrelly when you compress it too much, but that's more inconsistent velocities that cause innaccurate shots than it is dangerous increases in pressure.

If that is the case then I can definitely get 40gr ffg goex with wad and ball in my cylinder. The one round I fired seemed fine. I can't quantify this, but my gut feeling is that with the powder I'm using (Goex fffg) and the balls I'm using (Hornady .454"), I'm well below the max pressures my gun could withstand. I want to shoot the hottest load I can safely shoot in the gun. With a round ball in these guns, too much recoil is a non-issue. Something about the recoil of these BP pistols is addictive. Makes me want more! Stuff a 300 gr bullet over about 24grs of H110 and shoot it out of a Super Blackhawk and you won't be whining for more recoil. (don't try that without working up to it in your gun):D

I've seen mec write that he has been told that you cant overload bp pistols with regular bp or subs, and I proceed on the assumption that that is correct. mec, if I'm misquoting you please correct me.

I've also heard that they proof these guns with loads that would make you say ":what:   "

I use 40gr as my max load. :D

At present, I'm not using any wads of any kind in my loads.

I just pour in the measured powder, and then put a .454 ball in on top of the powder.

A .454 balls shaves a ring of lead on the chamber mouth when seated, so the seal is airtight.

The gentleman I bought the Uberti from, who is an N-SSA skirmisher, also used only powder, ball, with no wads.

He did use cornmeal filler for the lighter loads to take up the air space between the powder and the ball.

But with 35 grains of FFFg, I know the ball touches the powder when I seat the ball.

I'll have to try some 40 grain loads soon.

eagle24....... if you like the recoil of your 1858 try loading up some 250 grain 45 REAL's..... you have to take out the cylinder to load them in but they are pretty fun with 28 grains of powder... i have also loaded uo a 285 grain buffalo bullit for my 45 rifle.... about the same kick with 25 grains of 777. i really would suggest having a bullet sizer though cause being oversized for a rifle not a pistol they are fairly difficult to get in the chamber.
