Hello everyone. I have had this gun in the bottom of my closet for over ten years. I bought it in Hernando, Mississippi. The man said it was used in the calvary which is why it appears to be shorter in length. I know my history but nothing about these guns. I should have dusted the half inch dust off before I took the photographs. The firing mechanism works and the ramrod is the right length. Is this thang worth anything? Thanks1861 Springfield

It may have been used by horse soldiers or it may have been "sporterized" at some point when they were declared surplus and sold off to places Like Bannermans to be refurbished and sold again to folks who needed a rifle. The stock is an odd length so it may have been broken at just rounded over.

The hammer has been replaced. That's a wrong-shaped hammer for an 1861. Also, the ramrod is too short to load this thing.

Also, also, there is no cleanout screw, which means the barrel is from an 1863 Springfield (or possible an 1861 contract Colt, but that would be a bit rare), with an 1861 lockplate, and incorrect ramrod. From the angle, can't see what has been done for a front sight on the shortened barrel, or the rear sight.
A sporterized mixmaster, but done long, long ago... Might have some collectible interest to someone, but it's not going to bring any sort of premium.

OK, I measured the barrel and it is 33 inches long. As far as the front sight it has one of those raised dots (wrong word I know). The barrel has been repaired at some point but I can't see where this thing was shortened from the traditional barrel length. I don't want to just wall hang it b/c I know the thing will fall off the wall and break at the thin area of the wood. Anybody want to make me an offer? Or how should or where should I sell this. I was in need of $200 (not what I want but need). If anyone is concerned about it being too butchered. Just pay me the shipping cost to send to you. I am thinking what $25? Then you can pay the $200 if you feel ok with it. I also found a powder flask. It looks like the Dixon kind but the name plate is missing off the top. I will throw that in. Separate shipping of course. Let me know any advice.

There are also the initials VP on the top of the barrel near the loaded end of the barrel that is.

The initials VP are a standard proof mark. Absolutely nothing unusual there.
Since this is such a mix-master, might go for less than that auction I linked above (p.s. - note that the action got no bids).
