Pedersoli has had some quality issues lately...have to say they may only be slightly better than the Lyman product these days when it comes to their plains rifle...if even that. Their SRP is not justified (imho)
I don't agree, at all. The difference is more than "slight", it's significant. Have you actually handled the RMH?

I used to enjoy the resurgence of the " Free Trapper" mountain man craze. I had even got hold of a Missouri Hawken .54 and built a matching pistol. Still have the Green river skinning knives, possibles bag (beaded deer hide) and a few other gejaws. The bushcrafter movement/fad that has been going on for the last couple of years brings back memories of the skills I learned then.

Needless to say I love a well built Hawken or Long rifle over any Government issue.

Just for fun look this up. What does "Use your noggin" refer to?

Cheers,

ts

Thanks so much all!

After thinking it over, and reading your replies, I'm really leaning towards the Pedersoli Rocket Mountain Hawken in .54 caliber with maple wood stock.

Like I mentioned, I handled this model (but in .50 cal) at a local Cabelas, and the fit and finish was just terrific. I sat there holding it and gazing at it for a good five minutes or more. Super impressed. I know I could get the Lyman GPR... but they just don't look this pretty and from what I read, don't shoot quite as well.

I still would LOVE to get an 1861 Springfield someday, but this Hawken seems like it would be more up my alley and just more convenient all around. I remember a few months back the Pedersoli Hawkens were on sale at Cabela's website for something like $950. Dang I should have jumped on that!!

Thanks for the help guys, I'll be looking out for this gun and when I can get one for a good price, I'll bite the bullet and nab it.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. The GPR is a nice rifle but the Pedersoli is just better all the way around. Definitely a step or two up.

Oh man! I'm getting the vapors!

I need a possibles bag! Balls! Powder horn! Caps! Black powder shooting is like legos for men, all kinds of different pieces that= a bunch of fun!!!
