Hi there,

I just acquired another "stray" as my fiance' likes to call them, that needed a good home. She is an old 1891 Argentine Mauser that is functionally sound and headspaces OK...but...has been at some point rebarreled for .308...I'm not sure if I want to shoot this...I know the k98 mausers are fine actions for this kind of cartridge, but the 1891?

Is this a wall hanger?

Simply load your 308 down to 7.65X53 pressure levels and shoot the old rifle. For years I loaded 7.65X53 rounds using 308 cases because I was too short of money to buy Norma cases. The 308 case is only 2MM shorter than the 7.65X"53" case, a couple of firing cycles and the 308 grows. Just neck it up and use in original, unmodified guns.

1891 Argentine Mausers are beautifully crafted rifles, but are not designed to handle high pressure rounds in the 308 Win class.
As MMCSRET noted, if you load it to 7.65x53 pressure levels, it will give you many years of use.
If you have to shoot factory, then try to find the managed recoil ammo, as I believe they are slightly lower pressure than standard ammo.
