Ok, I need some help. I bought a 1911 9mm used pistol. The problem, it shoots 18 inches low at 7 yards. I also noticed the firing pin strike on a fired casing is not center, marking the round I discover this strike to be in the 6 o'clock position on the primer. Now I only have ordinary shop tools but I attempted to trouble shoot the problem. By observation, the barrel lock up appears good the hood engages correctly, no space between the outside chamber area of the barrel and the inside of the slide. I took the slide off and using the barrel and barrel link in the frame with the link pin, the rotation appears correct, the barrel cradles in the frame in the down position. With the weapon assembled, I placed a wooden dowel rod in the muzzle and feel no perceptible movement to indicate an exceptionally loose bushing. Any ideas appreciated.

Someone may have put an aftermarket "long link" on the barrel to make a tighter lock-up. Needless to say if you lift the back end of the barrel the pistol will likely shoot lower. Purchase a standard Colt link for your model pistol and see if it does better.

Thanks I will try that is there a point where the link is too short, minus when it does not engage the locking lugs?

John Browning never intended his 1911 frame to shoot anything but .45 acp. Get rid of it before lightning strikes you down!

As long as you are dealing with a genuine Colt pistol, and order the correct factory link (obtainable directly from Colt or www.brownels.com) the answer is "no." I will assume that no one has made substantial changes to the frame and slide - which would be obvious because of the missing finish wherever the work was done.

Another possible solution if this doesn't work is to install a higher rear sight. Or you can go off the deep end cost wise, and have a custom match grade barrel installed in combination with a new set of sights adjusted to shoot to the point-of-impact. Your wallet is the only limit. ;)

Heh heh.

I bet ole JMB would love a 1911 in .38 Super. :)

Listen to Old Fuff wmueller139, he'll steer you right.

I love shooting my 9MM 1911. Lot's of fun. Hope you get yours straightened out soon.

What make is it Philippines or Colt or

I have a 1951 Colt commander that shoots very well in 9mm.

shoots 18 inches low at 7 yards. That a lot in 21' . Is this from bench rest or off hand Be in dirt at 50'

Thanks, new link did the trick. I swear from the condition of the pistol, that must have been the only part ever changed.
