Here’s the deal:
I’m having a 1911 built and really, really, really want a GI style spur hammer, but I also want the comfort and look of a beavertail grip safety. Has anyone ever seen this done? My smith is asking if I want to bob the hammer (definitely not) or the grip safety (which I would rather no do). I have asked him if he can machine a “pocket” or recess into the grip safety, and he is going to try with some junk parts to see if it is possible, but we are starting to have doubts.
If anyone has seen this done, or anything close to what I’m talking about, please post pics, or tell me where I can look.

Thank you all in advance.

Fred

I'm a spur hammer fan too, and tried a Colt series 70 style spur hammer with a Kimber beavertail- no dice and deepening the recess in the beavertail to allow the spur it's full range of travel would have been impractical. I think though, that I can abbreviate the spur enough to eliminate interference, but still keep it looking "spurrish". It's on my worktable right now, so I'll get to it sometime before Christmas I imagine....

thanks for the reply

I already know that it is impractical, but I was hoping that it could be done with some effort without modifying the hammer.

I think the King Gunsight Company in California offer a "beavertail" safety that will work with a standard hammer. Also check Brownells (www.brownells.com) as they might have something.

King'swill work, and so will the excellent Jim Hoag's version.

DogBonz, you can just bob the hammer spur some and still have plenty to thumb if you wanted to. As least that has been my experience. It is clean and nice looking to if you like the spur hammers.
