I've been looking to get a 1911 for a while now. Would it be blasphemy to purchase one in 9mm? I love the platform and plan on buying another in .45 I was just looking at all the 9mm ammo I have and it kind of makes sense right now.

Also do they operate just as well in 9 as they do .45? Thanks,

-Ledge

1911s in 9mm function well. I have owned one but sold it quickly. I preferred the 45 acp round out of the 1911 platform and I preferred other 9mm handguns like the BHP.

The main issue with the looking at the 1911 in 9mm to save money is that they are typically more expensive than their 45 acp counter parts. There are lots of budget sub $500 1911s in 45 acp but only the RIA 9mm comes to mind when you look for one in 9mm.

Again IMHO it is more of a preference than a function issue.

At my local gunrange I rented a 9mm 1911 last week and fired fifty rounds. It was great. Freakin awesome really. She was a pretty Kimber.

My DW Pointman 9 is one of my favorite pistols to shoot. It was my only pistol that had to go back to the factory after my first range trip. Customer sevice was good and it hasn't missed a beat since returning.

1911 9mm... My favorite combination! Shot one at the range, had to have one. Wound up with an STI Ranger II and it is just too much fun to shoot! Low recoil and it will tear the x ring out of a target at 15 yards which is about as good as I have ever shot anything. Currently my "everything" pistol. I'm betting that I will lose it the moment my wife gets to shoot it.

I've got a S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series and a Fusion 9mm CCO. Great guns, both very accurate and very fast.

I have both 9MM & 45 ACP in the Kimber Custom SS Targer II. Both are very accurate and fun to shoot. The 9MM is cheaper to shoot and a little less recoil.

How about an old Star BM? Not really a 1911, but could pass for one from far away and at night.

All-steel pistol, single-stack magazine, fun to shoot.

For a while, they were available in the $225-250 range; not sure what they go for these days.

I had three 1911's in 9mm. The first was an old pre-CZ Dan Wesson Pointman in 9mm which my son "purchased" from me. It was very reliable and accurate but had a distinct preference for round nose bullets sincve it did not have a ramped barrel.

The second one was a SA 1911 Target in 9mm. Very reliable but the best group I could get at 50 ft was ca 4+ inches after two trips to the factory. I finally sold the gun

My current 1911 in 9mm is the Dan Wesson PM-9 a super gun, very accurate (1 inch at 50 ft) and reliable, has a tight chamber, and stainless frame and slide. It has a ramped barrel and feed HJP's or JSP's as well as RN bullets with equal relioability. Great value for the dollar, very tight slide frame fit, full length slide rib, FO front sight and adjustable rear sight, undercut frame, checkered front strap, and super factory trigger.

Yep, I'm convinced. I'll try shooting some next time I'm at the range to help me decide.

Thanks for the link cyclops - thats a great looking 1911!

I have a Springfield 1911 in 9mm and love it. Use it for competitions mostly. A lot of police events use the old 5" barrel rule and this is the best way to go. It's not a carry piece, as a full size 9mm 1911 doesn't make a lot of sense in that regard.

I'm gonna do like these other guys do and tell you you need something different than the 9mm.

Chromium Plated 38 super! classic cool, and you won't have to spit every time you say 9mm.

I didn't jump on a used Loaded I saw last month, I feel like it might have made a mistake not buying it. I ended up buying another M&P, Still happy with it.

I have a Springfield 1911 in 9mm. It is a nice looking gun that functions perfectly. However, it is not the most accurate 1911 I own. Not bad accuracy but not great either.

I have owned 1911 type guns in .45 acp since 1965. I have carried them in LE and the military and know some folks see 1911s in any other caliber as heresy. That being said, I have owned several 1911 types in 9mm and really enjoy them. For me it is the light recoil. My most recent 1911 type 9MMs have been Kimbers. I have owned three over a period of several years. All have benn 100% reliable with any ammo I have tried,to include commercial ball, hollow point, flat point, +P, +P+, NATO,everything. The 1911's five inch barrel also delivers some very brisk velocities, compared to the more common ~4" 9MM guns. Though I believe either can be made to work, for me, the 1911 style 9MMs using the ramped barrel, have been more reliable than my earlier guns, Colts, using the unramped barrels. This is just the opposite of my experience with the .45 caliber guns. My one .45 with the ramped barrel was a jammamatic, with continuous feedway malfunctions... ymmv

Hell, I love my 9mm 1911. In fact, I eliminated my 45 cal collection, and only have the one 1911. Mine is a Springfield Custom Shop build.
