I am looking to buy some 1911 mags these will be the standard size Commander or GI...what brand is best.

I use:

Wilson
Chip McCormick Shooting Star
Kimber

All have worked flawlessly for me.

I have had very good performance out of factory Colt, CMC Shooting Star and Power Mags, and the High Standard Gov't contract overruns, in my Colt.

The following assumes 1911 variants chambered in .45 ACP.

In five-inch steel 1911's, I have had very good performance from the Wilson Combat 47-series magazines, Metalform magazines with the round follower, and the factory Colt magazines.

Commander-length pistols are less forgiving of magazines and I no longer trust stock Wilson Combat 47-series magazines in these pistols; I believe the magazine spring is too weak, especially on the last few rounds, for reliable feeding with rounds outside of the 230-grain standard pressure envelope. In steel-framed Commander length (4.25-inch) pistols, the Metalforms and the Colt and Wilson Combat 47-series magazines with the Tripp Super 7 upgrade are the winners for me. In alloy-framed Commander length pistols, I use Wilson Combat and Colt magazines upgraded with the Tripp Super 7 kit to insure no ramp damage from metal followers. The Metalforms with the round followers do not get used in alloy framed pistols.

I am in the process of upgrading all of my older magazines (when it is time for spring changes) with the Tripp Super 7 upgrade kit. That way I can just grab a magazine without thinking about which pistol I am going to shoot.

Where it really matters, I use Wilson 47Ds. Never a problem with these.
I also have a few CMC Shooting Stars that have never given me a problem.
On my 9mm Commander I use a Colt mag and a couple of Meggars from CDNN (they were advertised as genuine Colt, but work great).
I also use a few genuine Colt magazines, but infrequently.

My S&W 1911 came with two Wilson Combat 8 round mags and they've worked flawlesly. Very good build quality, stainless steel, easy to see how many rounds are loaded, inserts into and drops from magazine well with ease. I'm going to get a couple more soon.

If you have a gun that will only work reliably with one or two certain brands of magazines, then you have an unreliable pistol.

Some pistols teed a small ejector tweek to properly use some eight round magazines. (but that's not the magazine's fault)

I've never seen a seven round follower damage an alloy frame.
However, the Devel/Shooting Star type follower can damage the feed ramp of some alloy framed pistols.
ESPECIALLY if the magazine spring is too weak. Some alloy guns though, have no problem with them.

Used to have Wilson 47Ds in my Kimber, now I have Novaks. Both of the Wilson mags I had would bind up on the 3rd or 4th round and cause a FTF. I have had no problems with the Novaks.

I don't know about that Blue. Some 1911 mags are just junk. I agree the pistol should shoot reliably with a factory mag. With a 1911 though, there are so many different magazine manufacturers, not all of them enjoy a good reputation. To say the pistol is unreliable because it doesn't work with them all is unfair.
How many different manufacturers make mags for Glocks and HKs anyway? If there were Glock and HK mags spit out by backwater factories in China, we would likely see the same problems.

You'd be surprised as to how few actual producers there are of 1911 magazines. Oh sure there are many, many brand names, but there are very few actual manufacturers.
Now many of those brands are manufactured to slightly different sprcifications but most of them are cosmetic.

Right now I have over thirty different "brands/versions" of 1911 magazines that have proven themselves to be 100% reliable in over two dozen guns.

I have only found one brand that consistently malfunctions and that is because every one (five) that I have encountered has the mag latch slot positioned a little too high.

By the way, I have never owned a Wilson magazine. I've never needed too.
I will however probably end up borrowing one or two to inspect and measure before publication.

+1 for Novak mags. I haven't had any problems with any of the three I have and they drop free. Unlike the Wilson mags I have.

Sorry I have not check to see all of the replies...I usually get an Email when I recieve a reply but for some reason I did not this time or maybe my kid s just deleted it...I did not know there was so many mag makers and yes mine is a .45 ACP by Springfield

Wilson is the only 1911 mag I will ever use. I own three 1911s and all carry Wilson magazines. They're the best.

I have Chip McCormack Power Mags which work fine. However, I think Wilson probably makes the best 1911 mags.
