part swappin'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a nrm blued colt and an orm matte colt that I would like to swap some parts between ie. the triggers, grip safety and hammer. If I use all of the parts from the trigger groups sear, mainspring, strut, trigger, grip safety and hammer, should this be pretty straight forward?

Swap

Howdy adamsbomb,

In theory, the parts mentioned should interchange, provided that both are Series 80 guns...The grip safeties are different between 70 and 80. The
Series 80 safety will work in a 70 or pre-70...but not the other way around.
The hammers and triggers are the same between the two.

A straight Colt for Colt trigger swap should drop in and go. Check for free
movement. The trigger should fall in and out under gravity alone.
Check for a sharp edge on the top and bottom of the stirrup and dress
it with a stone if you find one.

The only real potential for a problem is with the hammer. Although
Colt hammers are pretty consistent across the board, and will probably
be a straight swap in 98% of the Colt pistols that you try a given hammer in...there's always a chance that something about the pistols is different.

Go ahead and try it and note any drastic change in trigger pull. Test it
by loading two rounds per magazine and firing the gun until you're staisfied that there won't be any surprises of the full-auto variety or
hammer followdown issues.

Due to tolerances between hammer and sear engagement, it could also affect the thumb safety. Cock the hammer and engage the safety. Pull the
trigger with about 10-12 pounds of force. Hold the gun to your ear and slowly pull the hammer past full cock. If you hear a light "click" the safety
is letting the sear move, and the safety will need to be refit or replaced.

Hold the trigger and rack the slide to cock the hammer. Release the trigger and dry-fire the gun. Note the trigger pull. Repeat, and engage the safety. Pull the trigger again as described above with the safety ON. Wipe
the safety off and dry fire the gun again. If the trigger got noticeably lighter on the second try, the safety is allowing the sear to move...Refit or replace the safety.

Luck!
