I recently changed my MSH and the spring slipped off my sear. I got it back together and the hammer was free floating. So I took it apart again and reassembled. This time the hammer will cock and it will ignite primed brass. I did a function test and all the safeties work. So I think I did it correctly.

However, I just want to make sure its safe. If the sear and spring were not properly aligned would the hammer cock into single action?

Thanks for the help.

You are correct. Next, check the safties. With the gun cocked, try to drop the hammer by pressing on the trigger while the grip safety is not depressed. Then with the grip safety depressed, try it with the safety lock engaged.

Check further by loading and firing a single round to make sure the sear spring is properly adjusted and the hammer doesn't follow the slide (which would cause doubling if you had a loaded magazine.)

My AMT Longslide Hardballer fired with the thumb safety engaged, sheared the safety clean off too. I routinely check the safeties (thumb/grip) on all my 1911s now.

When you swapped out the MSH, did you swap all the little parts out of the old one? I put an arched MSH on one of mine and I had no idea that were so many little parts in there.

Probably the single most common mistake made during first-time full disassembly/reassembly is getting the left leg of the sear spring under the sear instead of on top. The gun will assemble, but the hammer won't cock.

The picture below shows the proper orientation.

Whenever the safety lug is overcut and allows the sear to move far enough to drop the hammer...the hammer will wipe the safety off on the way down faster than you can do it with your thumb.

I have a thumb safety that I purposely cut to allow the hammer to fall with it in the ON SAFE position...to demonstrate it.

And...

You can grasp the slide firmly...fire the gun...and keep it from moving at all with just a few pounds of forward force.

Here is the reason for the swap and the new looks:

I love the aggressive G10 grips on the Scorpion but I wanted to wear it in an IWB holster and I thought the grips would eat me alive while holstered. But the soft rubber grips on the TacOps would be perfect. The only issue is that the Scorpion grips need to be utilized with the supplied MSH because it completes the Magwell. So, I swapped the traditional Magwell MSH of the TacOps with the Magwell grips of the Scoprion. And as the TacOps is my home defense gun with a Light/Laser the aggressive grips are not an issue.

And you know what? I love the way the Scorpion looks now!!

The black grips, MSH and Magwell with the black controls looks perfect. And the Black/Green/Tan G10 Magwell grips look great on the TacOps.

I like the changes!!
