Because of variations in both guns and magazines, whatever functions. Wilson 47Ds were the only ones I tried that would work in my SIG 1911, for example. I dislike the (IMO) excessively extended floorplate as it adds bulk and length to the "in-gun" mag for concealed carry, although they do make for a more positive reload.

Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazines for both my 1911s. I haven't had any magazine related malfunctions since purchasing 10 of these 8-shot magazines several years ago. Not saying other magazines are of lesser quality, but Chip McCormick has proven itself to me, so I use and trust 'em.

For the record, the stock magazines from neither my Kimber nor my RIA were malfunction-prone.

Shooting Star and Wilson are the only ones that have been reliable for me under heavy IPSC-type use. Checkmate, Metalform, Promag and the like all seem to fall apart sooner or later.

My stock mags for my Les Baer Premier II look identical to my CMC Power Mags and the CMC's were at my local gun shop so that is what I bought. The price was just about the same. The only difference I could detect is the CMC mags showed the weld on the back and the Les Baer's didn't. I suspect Les requires a higher degree of finish to every thing he produces but the function seems to be the same. Both companies produce quality products, it was just more convenient to buy local.

My stock Kimbers work fine. The ones I stole from the army are iffy in everything I've tried them in. I bought some Chip McCormacks, and the followers were sticking out of the body, wouldn't eject, and didn't hold the slide open. Tax return time, I'm getting a stack of Wilson 47 Ds.

I like CMC. I didn't vote because I am not sure they really work better. Wilsons are good mags too. I go with the CMC because they have nver let me down and they are less money. The stock mag I have has never had any problems either.

Colt, or their equivalents from Metalform or Checkmate.

I've tried Wilson, McCormick, Tripp, MecGar, probably others i can't recall over the years. The only one that works in multiple brands reliably is Colt OEM magazines. Tripp would be my next choice, except their follower is sometimes too narrow to reliably hit the slide stop, unfortunately. I've tried at least three or four of each brand so as not to just get an off one and bias me.
