I was examining an older Colt GM that I just picked up, and it looks as though the thumb safety over-extends in the off position... not so much that the safety plunger is in danger of overriding the detent in the thumb safety, but it is noticeable.

Would this only be due to a weak plunger spring? The plunger spring is weak, I can tell. Is this a cause for concern, and what else might be causing the over-extension?

Thanks for your responses.

Pull it out and look at the window in the frame. I have seen the frame window battered down quite a ways from guys using wide lever safeties and/or high thumb holds that place the thumb on the safety and use it to help control recoil. You can get a lot of leverage on the lever and keep the muzzle down, but it is hard on the gun.

If you mean that the safety can be pushed down further than it needs to go to be in the off position, that is common and normal. As long as the safety doesn't stick in that position, there is no problem.
