Hey guys I'm getting ready to purchase myself a new handgun and I've narrowed it down to two.. I'm thinking of either a 1911 compact or the new Taurus 24 7 OSS 45 acp. I'm really needing a concealed carry gun so I know the 1911 would probably be a better choice with a crossbread supertuck holster but I just thought I would see what you guys had to say. The 1911's a classic and I also love the feel a function of the Taurus also... AHHHHHHHHHHHHH:banghead:

Yeah Im kinda torn between the two. It's probably going to be more of a preference decision...

Well this one really boils down to preference. I assume since you are looking at a Taurus 24-7 you are looking at a low end compact 1911. Something like a officers sized RIA.

Both are IMHO low end guns which may or may not serve your purpose. I would also look at the Kahr budget 45. It is small and you can get it for right around $400. IMHO it is a much better design than the Taurus.

Small 1911s have a smaller margin of error due to the design. When you shrink it to a 3" barrel you are shrinking the tolerances, sometimes to the point of failure. RIA seem to run well enough for most shooters but if I were carrying a small 1911 I would want something better than a RIA. YMMV

I personally think that commander size 1911 is just as easy to conceal as a officers. I think you have to ask yourself which one do you shoot better but honestly I think there are better options.

I've had experience with 3 sizes of 1911s and the .45 OSS. I agree that it's much better if the 1911 is at least a 4" model. My daily preference is a lightweight 5" model, which carries great IWB. However the OSS is a great alternative. Of the two, I'd say it really comes down to your preference regarding trigger type and ergonomics.

Skip the Compact and get an Commander size 1911, shoots and works way better than a 3" 1911. I like Taurus revolvers, tried their Beretta clone and was not impressed. I have no experience with the 24/7, so I will hold my opinion on it. So my vote would be for either a 4.25" 1911 or perhaps a used SIG P220 compact.

I think im going to go with the 1911 oficers model for now because I really want a .45 for concealed carry. I'm not really worried about having to have a nail driver at 50 yards, I want this one for up close and personal use. This won't stop me from getting a taurus 24 7 in the future. A friend of mine has a 9mm taurus 24 7 and its a great gun. It shoots great, high capacity mag, and easy to carry.

Then the Colt Defender it the way to go. I know, everyone says "Don't get a 3 inch 1911 it jams"

Well, mine doesn't. I had one jam in the first magazine and I haven't had one since. Going on 700 rounds since I bought it and still only the one jam with-in the first 8 rounds.

Also, its almost the same size as a 5 shot snubbie:

I have both a 1911 5" and the 24/7 OSS 45 with the 5.25" bbl. I have no experience with compact 1911's, but as the others have said, I heard they can be touchy. My full sized 45's can be carried concealed, but when I want to make it easier I carry a PT145. 10+1 rounds of 45 and a easier to hide package. I know that Taurus carries a stigma, but I've never experienced any problems with mine.

The XD and Omni don't get carried as much as the others.

I carry a Springfield Ultra Compact, which is officer sized and is a really nice carry handgun...

Really depends on what 1911 you are looking at? Springfield Champion or Operator? Or a RIA compact? Or something in between?

If you go with a 1911 I would spend a little more and get one with some factory upgrades. The GI series of 1911's have horrible rear sights, gritty, heavy triggers, spur hammers and regular grip safeties. For a few $ more you can usually get the same gun (regardless of brand) with a skeleton hammer (lighter and won't snag), skeleton trigger (lighter and usually finished better), beavertail grip safety (better protection for your hand and allows you hand to sit higher on the grip), Novak style rear sight (adjustable, better sight with easy upgrades to night sights).

It has also been my personal experience that if the answer to a question is "Taurus" then it was a stupid question. :)

I think that the offficer size 1911's get a bad rap. I have 2 that have yet to faile in my hands. I have a Colt enhanced officers model in S/S .45 ACP. that I bought new when they first came out. The first time my wife shot it she produced a stove top jam. I also have a Springfield Armory Micro compact 1911 A-1 .45 ACP. It's a milspec model, all steel, packerized, lowered ejection port, comander ring hammer, angled large rear slide serations, extended saftey, night sights, & rubber doubel dimond grips. This model was only offered for a short time. I also bought this gun new when they first came out. The first time my twin brother shot this gun, he produced a feed jam. These guns requier a FIRM GRIP !! Two different guns, shot by two different people, one male, one female, sepperated by almost 15 yrs. After instructing them both to tighen their grip, neither produced another failure. If U want a officers size 1911, get one. Just hold on tight !! :)

how accurate is the long slide 24/7 i really like the looks of that gun
Mine is very accurate. I wasn't expecting it to be as good a gun and as accurate as it is. Very comfortable to shoot. I have approx. 1500 rounds through it so far and hopefully a few more Monday if the weather is good. All trouble free. I'm seriously considering getting another one in 9mm while they are still on sale.

I ended up ordering a Rock Island Officers Model 1911. It came in Saturday and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow!!! = ] I really wanted a standard sized 1911 but I needed something for concealed carry and being a smaller framed person I thought a compact would be great for that job. Maybe I might order a long slide in the future so I can play Clint Eastwood on the weekends =]
