Rent one. Shoot it. Done.

Tell you what. You buy my round trip ticket to the nearest place where I can rent one and I'll do just that, but until then, I don't have the luxury of going to the local range and just choosing a gun and trying it out, cause there IS NO local range and the nearest one has like 6 guns. So if you don't mind I'll continue using this gun forum to talk to people about guns

Since you don't have the ability to "try one on", maybe keep in eye out on GunBroker for one that you might be able to get your money back on by selling it if it doesn't fit your needs.

I have a 5" GI model and a 3.5" Compact (Officers Model, basically). Both are all steel. While the 5" does tame the round a bit more, the .45apc (like others have said) isn't much of a rip-snorter. I actually prefer the look and feel of my Compact. Even rapid fire shots are easy to keep on target.

I haven't found a .45apc that is uncomfortable to shoot. I shoot a lot of .367 and .40 S&W. Both of those are way more noticeable in terms of report and recoil than shooting my smaller 1911.

As to recoil, most factory 1911s come with 16 lb recoil springs that become 15 lb springs after several hundred/thousand rounds. I use Wilson Combat/Wolff variable power 16/16.5/17 lb springs for target loads and 17/18/18.5 springs for factory JHP ammunition and felt recoil reduction and actual muzzle flip is measurable, observable and perceivable.

For around $7 for these recoil springs, I would select the pistol you are happy with and try different rate springs to "tailor" the recoil reduction you desire - http://www.midwayusa.com/find?newcategorydimensionid=18806

How are smith 1911s, or 1911s in general with wear and tare? How about in scandium?
When I was looking for my replacement 1911, local range rents various 1911s (Colts, Kimbers, Paras, SAs, etc.) and I got to do comparison shooting along with various 1911s my friends had. I tried to obtain a Dan Wesson PM7 and considered Smith & Wesson 1911/SC which has an external extractor. I ended up selecting the Sig 1911 railed TacPac which is built on stainless steel frame/slide with black Nitron finish and also has an external extractor. After almost 7000 rounds, it has not broken any parts and has maintained the accuracy.
