I'd really like to see an entry-level priced 9mm 1911 ($400-500ish range). Taurus has had one listed for the past couple years, but who knows when (or if) it will ever come out.
I like my PT1911. After I got it broken in (rough first round feeding out of the factory magazines during the first 500 rounds) it has turned out to be very reliable.
I started out the same as you...thinking that I'll buy the PT1911 and might buy a higher dollar model later. Frankly, I have not found a good reason to spend more money on another 1911.
Look into the Auto-Ordanance 1911A1. I picked one up today for $525. Don't expect any frills, though. Single mag, standard hammer, trigger, mag and slided releases, etc. In other words 100% G.I. It has given no problems thus far, but I've only been running FMJ. I have tried a Kimber mag in it and it runs just like the factory. For the price, you get a base 1911A1 made in the USA for less than $600. I put Hogue grips on it but I think that will be as far as I go with customizing...maybe.
