I'll 2nd on the Springfield. I own 3 different models,

Anybody have a Springfield commander they want to sell me cheap? :)

I like the looks of the Rock Island, bang for bucks speaking.
The new Remington R1
In the range you should be able to get a colt.. A local shop had a Officers for about $750, but I alerady had that size.

or a STI.. the entry level.

all solid and go bang

Depends on whether you want something new or if you're willing to consider used.

STI Spartan is aprox. $630, STI Trojan is $999. Best out of the box triggers IMO, STIs work and shoot better $ for $ than the rest. SIG, S&W also make great pistols available in this price range. Springfield Armory, Para Ordnance get honorable mentions. I own everthing but a Para, but have shot a friends, nice guns at the bottom of the price range. Try http://budsgunshop.com for availability and price on all but the STI. For STI try http://dawsonprecision.com or http://shootersconnectionstore.com. I would get an STI if you can.

+1.

I'd have to go with Springfield since my loaded has been flawless. However, I picked up a new FS RI nickel Tactical a month ago for under $500, and it has run exactly like my much more expensive SIG and SA, that is to say w/o one problem.

I would also recommend the SA Loaded. Mine has been great. Shot about 3,500 rounds throught it and still love that gun.
