I have a double size trainer of the 1918A2 BAR. It is made of aluminum and steel and has cut aways to show the internal mechanisms. I am searching for a magazine and some inert ammunition that originally came with this mock-up. Any leads would be appreciated.

Double Size Trainer

Thanks,

I have tried Numrich - the girl on the phone really didn't want to deal with me. Told me to call another number. The girl at that number told me to call the first number. Very frustrating. I contacted SARCO and got a phone message in about an hour. They didn't have any but their service is great!

Still looking for any leads!

We had a couple of these on the wall at the Army Surplus store I worked at as a kid.

I dont know where you would get them now.

Your best bet may be to have someone who is good with metal work make you those parts. The ammunition probably could be made from wood on a lathe but the magazine would have to be constructed from sheet metal.

It's probably been at least 40 years since the last of these were in the military training aids system.

Lucky find. I'm jealous. I drew an M16A1 mockup like that from TASC once and sure didn't want to give it back after the training was completed. But there weren't a lot of them in the system so a unit couldn't really keep one for it's own use.

We still have a large surplus store here and hanging from the rafters are an m1 carbine and what I think is a browning .30 mg...both large cutaway models. I once asked how much they were and was told they were not for sale. When my sons were younger they always liked for me to take them out there to look them over. I rarely turned down the opportunity.:D

Surplus Store

I would appreciate contact info for that store. It is a start, which is more than I have now.

Thanks

There's one of those over the entrance to an indoor range somewhere - I can't recall where though.

theres a video out there, of a soldier doing drills with a double sized trainer. its hilarious

Bill Ricca

I tried Bill early on in this project. He only compiled the history of the double size trainers and has no practical knowledge on them. I was unable to remove the barrel and could not determine weather it was threaded into the receiver so I contacted him. He had never seen one in real life. If anyone is interested, there are three set screws that retain the barrel which were obvious. Beyond that the barrel just slips right in with a close tollerance. Unfortunately mine had created burrs from the set screws from years of mishandling. Many blows with a rubber mallet and many superlatives were required to separate the two. Same for the stock which was badly mismatched with the receiver. Many, many hours of filing have produced perfect fits. I must have removed three pounds of aluminum, one file stroke at a time. I now have a headspace issue and need to ream the chamber. I puchased some one inch drill rod to build a reamer with but my lathe could not handle its toughness. I will probably try again with mild steel as it only has to work once and will be cutting aluminum.

Double size BAR

No, I was not missing any parts for the BAR. I just needed a reamer in 6006 caliber to ream the chamber to adjust the headspace. Actually, I was missing the magazine. I built one from a solid block of wood which is non-functioning. Do you have one available?

Im thinking it was steel. The gun belongs (belonged) to a buddy of mine, and I havent seen him or the gun since we moved away about 5 years ago. He was looking to sell it at the time, and I believe I posted something about it back then. Dont know if he still has it or what.

I was wondering if you had found a source for parts because I just bought one that is missing some small parts.

Parts

I have the trainer hanging from the rafters right now and don't relish the thought of bringing it back down. Never the less, I could do so if required to measure the parts. What specifically are you searching for. I took numerous pictures when I reworked mine and those might provide the info you need. I need specifics though.

That's Great. As soon as I'm able to take it apart and get an idea of what small parts are missing I'll take you up on that. Mine was "stored" on the roof of a building for a decade or more and requires some soaking to break it down.
PS. Any Idea what these are worth?

I never could find an answer to their worth when we were actively looking for my friend. Basically, what ever you can get for them was the answer I always got. Of course, with stuff like this, when you want to sell it, no one wants it, and when you want to buy one..... well, you know how it goes.

This here is the most Ive heard about them in a long time.

Parts

I don't guess I'd ever sell it, besides my Wife even thinks its cool and wants me to hang it on the wall in the Den.

The magazine is steel with an aluminum follower. I could look into having it duplicated if you'd like to replace the wood one.
