I just bought a 79 ruger security six for $300. However it has rubberized grips on it. Where they originally wood grips and someone switched it over?, or could they have come with them. Also how much would it cost to switch to original wood grips?

Not a bad deal in this market.

Probably someone switched them.

$20-$50. You can get beautiful "custom" grips for $75-$100

to switch back? about $10 on ebay.

to my knowledge, all 6's came with small wood grips, but there were some target wood grips too.

Make sure when you get "new to you" grips that the prefix number is correct for your Ruger.

I figured they where switched to rubber. Anyone no where I can get original wood grips that are specifically made for the year and model?

Those CDNN grips are not Ruger factory grips. They do look like a steal for $9.99, but they are not factory grips.

Each panel of the original target grips had 1/2 a "window" at the bottom of the grip so the serial number would be visible on the butt of the frame. These do not have that.

The small original "magna" style grips did not extend past the frame in any direction, so no window was needed.

Note: If the three first digits of the s/n are 150 your gun takes different grips but you said it's a '79 so you should be good.

Gunbroker usually has lots of factory original Security and Service Six grips listed. A lot of folks who use the original service style grips do so with a Tyler T-grip to fill out the grip in the hand more.

The rubber grips do feel real comfortable in my hand, especially since I have bigger hands. I just have always liked the way the wood grips. I love this gun, and I am glad I bought the Security Six as my first revolver.
