I purchased 2) 1200 rd cases of ak ammo awhile back for $180. Both cases were sealed with the bands intact, the guy said they were soft point. On top of both cases were the letters "sp", hence "soft point". After opening them I realized that both are AP. The boxes are yellow with the following:

China North Industries Corporation

7.62x39mm Cartridge
Steel Core Bullet
Non-Corrosive

The cartridge cases have 31 over 92.

What I am trying to find out is the approximate value of this ammo. Can anyone help me?

Not sure of that brand or type of rounds but 7.62 x 39mm is now running about 18 to 20 cents per round.

That's $216 to $240 per case of 1200 that you have.......almost $500 worth of ammo. ;)

It's worth more than that. You have Norinco AP ammo. That hasn't been imported for many years. You have AK gold there my friend.

WOW. That stuff sells for 2 dollars a ROUND on some websites......

ATF says that "7.62x39 ammo with steel core bullets" is AP.

My dad has 700 rounds of the stuff. You've easily got thousands of dollars worth of ammo right there.

I bought it about 6 months ago. Each wooden box had what appeared to be a copper band around them (being that I cut the bands I don't think he knew exactly what was in them). The guy said they were in a climate controlled area since he purchased them in the early 90's. If it helps all the cartridge cases are copper-washed. Not that it really matters, but he wanted a FTF meeting to sell the ammo. After introducing himself, he stated that if I weren't white, he wouldn't sell them to me. I thought he was odd for saying that.:scrutiny: HM2PAC it is Norinco to the left of the writing is NORINCO thru what appears to be a pontiac arrow and some sort of gear wheel (all in red).

It's worth quite a bit more than regular ammo, but it's not exactly gold either... at least not around here. I've seen steel core 7.62x39 for about 40 cents a round at the last couple gunshows I've gone to... and the cheap stuff was going for about 30 cents a round there.

On the same link he's selling (or trying to sell) SS-109 for a dollar a round too. I wouldn't get your hopes up of getting anywhere near that.

Well being that there is no real value to it:banghead:, I'll just use it for swiss cheesing steel.:D It makes a visible spark from 35 yds @ dusk and looks really neat. Thanks for the help guys.

Uh, I have seen that ammo quite a bit at a local gun show, Norinco steel core, it brings nothing near those imaginary internet prices you guys are talking about. At least not in Illinois.

Matt304: If you want some I suggest you buy some up quietly when you get the chance. Since it can't be imported anymore unless another EO is signed reauthorizing its importation again, it will just get harder to find.

Around here I've only seen it for sale twice in the last five years. And that was out of the personal stashes of a couple guys hard up for money.

One other thing: Most of that chinese steel core stuff is CORROSIVE, so check it, and clean your rifle accordingly.

Whether or not you could find somone who would pay a premium because it's steel core, that was still a REALLY good deal for 2400 rds.$100 is about the going rate for 500rds of Wolf these days, so you came out REALLY good.

Its been selling at gun shows for around $6.00 per 20 the past 2 years, Fac 31 in 92 it may actually be lead core the only way to tell is to open a box if its lead core it will have green sealer around the bullet, if not its steel core the packaging was identical for both...... I've still got 3/4s of a pallet of the stuff, very accurate but its not AP (except in the minds of the uninformed and liberals looking for a justification to ban) its simply a mild steel core used to reduce production cost as a side effect it makes for a very uniform bullet versus straight lead....

For awhile last year it was bringing a premium however that wave has already crashed now its only slightly more valuable than regular Wolf....... I really shoulda dumped a few cases of mine when it was going top dollar but...... I like the accuracy and consistency of it so....... I have opened sealed cases and found both steel and lead core in the same case so its pretty much a box by box thing...

Now I also still have a cr@pload of the Steel core 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 also.... its all very reliable and is all corrosive regardless what was printed on the commercial boxes......

Now if anyones willing to actually pay even close to those old prices...... after all theres a sucker born everyday, recently someone was showing off the AP 7.62x39 he bought with the home printed packaging in zip lock baggies 20 rounds for I think it was like $18 for basic brass case Yugo....... that sells in its original packaging at $4 per 20 rounds ;)

That stuff ain't safe to shoot. I'll take it off your hands for $100. Better safe than sorry.:D
That's stuff is actually some of the best ever manufactured. I haven't even seen any in years. Want to sell some? Let me know.:)

Like dstorm1911 posted it is a mild steel core, not a true AP round, even though it's been classified as such.

But it is generally accurate and will go deeper than most slugs. It is also good against semi-hard targets.

Do not shoot any of that stuff. Save it. Research this very well. You have thousands of dollars in ammo right there. Best to sell it, then use that money to buy more guns or a LOT more ammo.

There is nothing special about the mild steel core Chinese ammo, but it does have that taboo factor since the ATF made a stink about it. People always want what they can't get. That's why all the latest and greatest bullets are loaded into ammo and labeled 'LE Only' ...greatest marketing ploy of all time. Makes gun nuts go crazy wanting it. They beg people with letterhead, they try and find deals anywhere they can - and they pay outrageous amounts for it. Or course, there's nothing illegal about owning it or using it. But like I said, people want what they can't have or what the pro's use. Regardless of their needs, performance or any other factor.
