There was a thread not long ago about where members of THR keep weapons in the house. Still do not have the full story but.....

The Sheriff's Department working narrative describes what happened next: A man or men were either lying in wait within or followed the woman into the opened garage. She was then struck in the head with an unknown object. The child's father emerged from the house, shooting one or two assailants in the garage. The woman got back into the SUV and drove off, busting though the partially closed garage door. The male homeowner, suffering a gunshot wound to the hip, called 911.

And unless we forget http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/24/nyregion/24slay.html

The wife and two daughters of a prominent Connecticut endocrinologist were killed yesterday morning by two men who invaded their suburban home in Cheshire, held them hostage for hours, set fire to the house and then rammed three police cars with the family’s sport utility vehicle before they were subdued, the authorities said.

I am sorry for posting this if it upsets you...it really bothers me that there is so much meanness.

Anyone coming home at 3am, or anytime for that matter, alone or with a loved one need to be 110% ON. Check rearview mirrors; leave car running until garage door is almost all the way closed; stay in locked car until garage door is closed; take a look around before getting out of the car.

As an aside, with the caveat of not knowing the situation, I can't think of many good reasons for a mother to be out with her 1 YO at 3 AM in the morning.

Yes I wondered if she called her husband and told him she was on the way home?
Did not say why she was out so late....maybe a sick mom or 10,000 other reasons?

I am not sure what business it is of ours what time a woman and her child get home. The attacks happened and are the only people at fault are the assailants.

As for the Cheshire murders, that hits very close to home as I live, and have grown up, in Connecticut, close to Cheshire.

The only good taken from the Cheshire murders is a realization that anyone, anywhere can be attacked. When people ask I find it necessary to carry or own guns for SD. I simply point to Cheshire and they quickly fall silent.

I am hoping situations like this will encourage people to take steps towards being able to defend themselves. Instead of relying solely on police. As in the Cheshire murders the PD was outside waiting for back up to go in while the murder/rape was going on.

This attack was local to me and is rather interesting by what is unsaid and what it implies.

The full facts would allow folks to be aware of what behavior could lead /enable a dangerous situation...and knowing that, a plan to avoid the same circumstances.

1. 3 A.M. is an unusual time to be out with a young child, especially when there is another parent at home.
2. It was very fortunate that the husband/father responded to the garage at that time of the morning....with a gun if he was expecting her. One would think that he was responding to the sounds of the garage door opening, as she was not shot, but rather struck on the head.
3. Where the assailants laying in wait or was this a crime of opportunity?
4. Simple muggings...followed home at a late hour...usually don't involve two armed assailants and would normally entail a confrontation rather than being initiated with a clubbing.

On the other hand, the circumstances described do fit nicely with a planned home invasion. Both the laying in wait for entry and the resident's response. There really aren't enough facts available yet to form an accurate idea of what the circumstances leading to this were

I read another version of the story. In the other version the woman was there, then left with the child when the shooting broke out. I'm interested in hearing exactly what happened.

The obvious question would be, if she wasn't coming home and into the garage, how did:

1. The garage door get opened...to let the suspects enter?
2. Why was she the first one attacked?
3. Did she put the child in the car after she was attacked and recovering?
4. Why would she run toward the gunfire with her child?
5. Why was the garage door closing as she tried to leave?

I actually have a great scenario for this involving a cuckold (modern, not historic meaning) husband and domestic violence...but without more facts, it wouldn't be anymore accurate than any other guess.

All we really know is that:
1. A gun battle took place, at ~3 AM, in the garage of a residential home.
2. Three people were shot including a man who lived there.
3. A woman who lived there sustained a non-gunshot injury and fled the scene with her child in a vehicle.
4. As she was driving out of the garage, the garage door was closing and was knocked off it's tracks

Interesting link, I look forward to reading more as more comes out...I used to work in that area (as in been on that corner a number of times)

The major disconnect that I'm seeing in the television version, as oppose to the print version is still the woman's injuries, the child in the vehicle and the point/method of entry of the attackers...plus the woman's changing relationship with the residence and resident

Maybe she was coming home after an out of town trip? I'd like to know what brought the husband into the garage, clubbing someone doesn't make alot of noise unless she screamed.

I am happy to know she had the common sense to jump in the car and remove herself and child to safety. (I didn't read the article, just commenting on ya'lls comentary.)

Well, I don't know anymore details than any other armchair warrior here, but ... if I were waiting for my wife and child to come home at 0300, I'd be walking into the garage when I heard it open, and I would have a gun in my pocket or belt. So, if someone started shooting at me, I'd be shooting back.

Nothing nefarious about it.

And I have driving my under-two children around in the car at night when they wouldn't go to sleep otherwise, because they always went to sleep in the car. Perhaps that is all the mother was doing.
