Ive been on a small caliber kick and loving it.
But i have a slot open for a gun i don't own, a bolt action .22lr
My goal is accuracy mainly since i just target shoot, And it must be readily able to accept a scope and rings without being drilled and tapped.

I really like the Savage accutrigger, But that doesn't mean its all i would buy.
But a good trigger or one thats easily helped along is a must. I much prefer mag fed over tube fed as i find those annoying.

Stock type and material isnt that important, But a plus if Boyds makes an aftermarket one for it if i decide to later upgrade it.

I buy Blued guns anyhow, so stainless is just an unnecessary expense.

I have a Savage MkII (stainless!:)) and am very happy with it. I'm pretty sure your kind fine a MkII at the big box stores for less than $200.

I'm sure there are plenty of other options, but you really can't go wrong with the Savage + Accutrigger IMHO.

I have a Savage93R17 BTV .17hmr so im already accutrigger biased, But im gonna keep an open mind.

Any Marlin guys wanna speak up? I used to have a Model 60 as a kid 30 years ago which jambed as much as it fired, But being 8 years old i have no clue what ammo my father was feeding it.
I know thats a semi auto also.
Ill also be keeping my eye open on the used market as .22lr bolt actions are rather plentiful at times at one shot i seem to live at. But finding one with an accutrigger is hard.
Even used a CZ will be out of my range as with Ruger, But i need to recheck their offerings.

I just sold my Mossberg 46Bb. You should be able to find them for around $100. It was the most accurate .22lr I've ever shot.

Keep your eyes open for a used Remington 22 rifle. If buying new, I would choose the Savage Mark II which I believe are about at the $200 pricing area for the cheaper versions.

I've been researching the subject now for a couple weeks myself. I've decided on the Mark II FSS for a barn gun. I haven't gotten a price from my gunshop yet but I'm expecting it to be around $220. It comes drilled and tapped.
I recently shot my friend's Marlin bolt action .22 and was not impressed. I don't need open sights on the .22 I'm looking at but if I was, those Marlin open sights were terrible. I know its popular now, those green and orange fiber optic sights but jeez. it just didn't look right on a good ol .22 rifle. I was really turned off by it.
FYIW - If I had a .22 that was the most accurate .22 I have ever shot, I would never have sold it for $100..

I've a 16 year old Marlin 25N bolt gun. I don't use a scope so my accuracy is a bit limited but the fiber optics I replaced the stock sights with do help and it is a lot of fun. And cheap.

My marlin is great, but then again, so is my Savage. Both will serve you well.
The plastic stocks on the Savage rimfires are absolute CR@P though-do yourself a favor and buy a wood stocked version.

The MarkII-F is the version i was thinking i could pick up new at the best price, But its always possible to find better used ones in that price range.
For some reason new Marlin bolt .22's are scarce around me, But i know the wooden stock i seen on a newer one wasn't good at all. But that was a low end model.

I cant use open sights unless its about 25' or less as my eyes suck and most likely need a new set of prescription glasses. I always use a red dot sight at minimum, But id put a mid power 3x9 scope on this so i can shoot 50-100 yards.

Im going out today to check a few places out, Sadly my favorite place with used .22's is closed on Sunday and Monday but im in no hurry. It would be great to find a nice used CZ or Browning as a steal used.

I've got a Marlin 981-T and I really like it. It's accurate and feeds well either single shot or with the tube magazine. I wanted the tube magazine since it'll eat shorts, longs or long rifles. The ammo shortage of last year showed me the importance of you never know what you'll be able to find and this increases my chances. ;)

I was just about to ask about that after reading the other "Value" .22 thread here.
With a bolt action just what flavors of .22 ammo will it eat? Just LR?
I think with a Mag fed gun its possibly .22lr only. That pretty much would limit the gun as you cant single feed a mag fed gun as the extractors wouldn't engage correctly without slamming the bolt shut and putting excess wear on them?

I just really dislike tube fed since i had that old Marlin 60 so many years ago. But had my dad known how to pick the right ammo or clean it correctly that may have never happened.

The Remington 510, 511 and 512 series of bolts.

Quite possibly the most accurate .22's ever mass produced.

Check Gunbroker.

I agree with both of these.

I just checked Remington's website and they only offer autoloaders and pumps now, unless I'm missing something. Are the 510, 511, 512 discontinued?

Very regretfully so thomis.

The 510 was a single shot, the 511 was magazine fed and the 512 was tubular fed.
All of them would shoot shorts, longs, or long rifles.
The later versions had an integral scope rail.

There are a few examples of all three on Gunbroker right now including a mint 510.

A good representation of any one of the above will go from $125.00 on up to $250.00.

Well worth the money.

FWIW -- I just checked out a MarkII-F at Walmart ... 139.00
I may have to pick one up.

The plastic stocks on savage centerfires are also crap. No more savages for me.

Look at Marlins website and take a peek at the 980S and 925. Both are clip fed. They are 22LR only. The 980S is a stainless steel action. You said you don't like SS but the SS rifles from marlin have better quality sights than the blued versions. I have a new 981T and love it. Its tube fed and I like it becuase I can short CBs, shorts, longs and long rifle rounds. I prefer tube fed 22s. My 981T was $173 OTD.

The 980S has a synthetic stock and the 925 is a beechwood stock.

If you can find a Glenfield 25 (marlin made) they are mag fed and will take all 3 types of 22 ammo. I paid $115 for mine and got two more mags from marlin for $25.

I have never owned a marlin rifle that wasn't an accurate gun. Some are scary accurate for what they cost.

I also have a Remington 581 that will handle all 3 22 rounds that is mad fed. It only weighs about 5lbs. Its nice to carry around. You can find them on GB for around $125 and up.

I was contemplating visiting the fun store today but a headache mixed with Downtown rush hour traffic just don't sound like fun, so ill head out tomorrow.
For now im gonna just get a feel for the used market and whats available and if i see a score throw it in layaway as i just bought 2 new guns in the last 2 weeks and need accessories more than new guns for a while.
But once thats settled, i can concentrate on new guns also. Used ones you cant wait around until you have the money as it will be gone the next day for sure.

Mabey ive been looking at the wrong gun, But i keep seeing a bolt action Marlin very low end model which i forget its number that had a wood stock that was just horrid. Looked like pine with a red shellac on it. But i wont base a companies product on one example either, Thats foolish.

Id prefer a good used one personally. More value for the buck and its been broken in and a bit looser, As long as it was taken care of. Which brings up a point. My local shop sells so many "USED" but unfired guns its crazy, And i think once this gun buying frenzy is over it will happen even more.

Where in the heck you people live where Walmart still sells guns? I love shopping at Walmart but in Ohio you wont find nothing but airsoft and pellet guns. But at least they have scopes and some accessories.

Just talking about looking at guns makes my head feel better and mabey i should go, But a nap sounds better. That way i can go in rested and take my time and enjoy the day of gun groping.

Wal-Mart stopped selling guns on a store by store basis based on the gun sales of that particular store.

REmington 511

There is on near me, they want $250 for it. Hm-mm....

after hearing all the glowing comments, I might have to pick it up.
