200 yard / .308 target

[Redneck with a 40]

Here's a pic of the rifle and my 200 yard groups today. I fired 5 (4) shot groups today, prone with a bipod.

My load is 44.5 grains of IMR-4895, Nosler 168 gr HPBT, Rem 9-1/2 primer, Rem case, 2.810" COL.

One group was trash at 3", but the rest were good in my book, 1.2", 1.6", 1.7" and 2". I think I've got a load here. My barrel was getting warm toward the end, could be part of the reason they were opening up a little.

Good shooting! I just loaded up some 168gr SMK over IMR4895, and Sierras load data starts at 38.2 to a max of 41.3gr. My loads are gonna be pretty weak compared to yours. What kind of velocity were you getting?

I'm going off of Hodgdon's on-line data, starting load is 41 grains, max is 45.4. I didn't have my chrono with me today, but I'll bet they are 2600-ish, which is fine. I was getting 2640 fps at 44.8 grains last weekend, but they weren't as accurate. 44.5 was noticeably better.

I'm also going to turn my scope up 3 clicks, should put me about a 1/2" high at 200 yds.

Aren't 168 Nosler's great? Isn't IMR 4895 great?

If a 308 won't shoot well with a 168 Match bullet and IMR 4895, something is seriously wrong.

I would not call a 3" group at 200 yards trash. It is simply not as small as your other groups.

I was going to nit pic a little bit; then i re read ; prone, with a bipod!!
not bad homie, what were your conditions like, and did you have your bipod sitting on anything smooth, so the legs could slide around a bit?

It was sunny, about a 10mph tailwind, 65 degrees. I was shooting on some forest service land, so I was on a pad, bipod was on the dirt, so there may have been some movement.

I'll continue to shoot this load, see how consistent it is. If I can do this again next weekend, then its a winner.

I figured my best group would be the center target cluster, that's the easiest part of the target to see, so my reaction was.....hell yeah!, 1.2 inches baby!

I forgot to mention, the rifle is a Remmy 700 SPS Tactical with the 20" heavy barrel......its badass.

Alright Redneck, I found some old data from Speer #11, with 44gr as max. I hammered my 40.0, 40.5 loads apart and went with 41.0, 42.0, 43.0 Were off to go shoot, and I'll see if these shoot as good as my Varget load

Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x40, it was already mounted and zero'd when I bought the rifle. I like it, sharp, bright, and clear.
