2011 magazines?

I have always heard how great MBX mags are.
I ordered 5 in 45 cal and they will not drop free. It’s very clear they are not square.
MBX would not stand behind them.
I wasted over $500.
Never another MBX for this 2011 fanboy with a mag addiction.
Not the 1st time I've heard that.
My LGS has mbx mags, 2011 and CZ TS mags. I just don't see a higher quality product.

From those 3 choices, I'd buy the Prodigy, mine is the 5in version.
For me, the Prodigy was an attempt to dip my toes into the 2011 pool without having to resort to a cannonball.

I would NOT buy a one without first handling and inspecting it first. These guns were riddled with issues upon release. SA seems to have fixed the issues and released a gen 2 slide. The gen 2 slides have lightening cuts on the underside of the slide in the rear.

It's a soft shooting pistol with a massive bull barrel. It's also completely unbalanced and front end heavy. Mine will shoot a golf ball sized hole at 30 yds.

It uses a plate system, you can run any optic under the sun on this gun. The other guns you are stuck with mini optics due to being direct threaded and not wide enough for a RMR footprint.

Before you mount your optic plate, remove the extractor and check the length of the mounting screw. Mine was too long and bent the extractor causing it to fail to extract every single round at around 500 rds.

So far my Prodigy has
EGW extractor
EGW thumb safety
EGW steel main spring housing...to add weight in order to help with the imbalance
Harrison Design true radius trigger kit

The stock trigger was good, it just sucked for a 1911 trigger.

That live free pistol, just looks and reads like a cheap gun.

Is there a way to identify a newer/revised Prodigy without stripping it and looking at the underside of the slide? I notice a lot of them for sale now with the Hex red-dot, is that at all a good indicator that it's the newer version?

If you lock the slide back, you can see two channels cut into in the slide so no need to disassemble.

The hex dot was an option right from the release, so no. I've handled around 13 different Prodigy pistols, 2-3 had hex dots, I wasn't impressed with those dot.

Another thing on the Prodigy, the slides are also milled for the traditional 1911 bushing. Some people have ran a threaded traditional 1911 barrel for suppressor use.

SVI mags are my favorite, Dawson tuned STI's #2 but just their followers and springs in regular STI mags work well.

For my Cz Ts2, I run 3 oem mags, and one 140mm MBX.

For my Shadow 2, I plan on 2 MBX 140mm mags and 2 Oem. With the 3rd OEM being a barney mag.

The rich guys run 140mm mags for every mag. But if the stage plan has opportunities for mag changes early, having cheaper OEM on the ground might make more sense.

Any way you cut it, if you go down the 2011 route, you'll be a magazine expert soon. And you won't like how you got there.

Oh, go to DAA now and get a good mag tube brush. You'll be needing it.

Try to get a modern 2011. At least two of the pistols you mentioned, have a janky grip safety still. Leave those to retro 1911's.

.45 ACP ammo is heavy, as is the 1911 pistol.

Why one would choose to carry a second stack of ammo in the pistol, instead of their pocket, is beyond me.

Well, I snagged a 5" Prodigy on the used market. It's one of the newer ones with the slide lightening cuts. It came with 1 17-rd mag and 2 20s, but the PO says that one of the 20s can fail to feed on the last round. He mentioned this is sort of a known issue (that Springfield uses the same springs in both 17 and 20-rd mags and as a result the 20s don't always feed properly) and that folks are using Staccato mag springs to alleviate it. I'm trying to verify which springs to get. Is this correct?

17rd - 126mm
20rd - 140mm

Do I need to get followers as well? Not sure when I'm going to get this to the range but I'd like to order what I need shortly to try to ensure decent reliability. Thanks!
