This season has been a struggle. Lots of life going on (all good things) that have kept me out of the woods more than in most seasons.

However, I’ve gone when able and more often these past few days.

Today I got a late start. Made it to the stand around 4:45 pm. Around 5:10 pm I saw 3 does at 280 +/- yards with a buck chasing one around. Took a peak, and opted to let him live. Too small.

Around 5:15 pm another doe runs into the plot. The kind of run that looks like she’s being pursued. Maybe 80 to 100 yards out. I get the rifle at the ready. The buck bursts out of the wood line. He’s in pursuit.

Rifle is shouldered now, and I’m trying to find him in the scope. He’s maybe 20 yards in the plot by the time I have him. No time to tell exactly what he is, but I can tell he’s a shooter.

He gives me his broad side at an angle. It’s all I’ve got and it’s now or never. The bullet hit in the middle of the kill zone, exiting the other side about half way through his neck.

Immediately I can tell he’s hit. His body contorts, and he falters. He somehow reversed course and makes a sprint to the wood line.

From my stand, I can hear him crash and I know he’s done for. Entering the wood line, I can see him about 15 yards or 20 yards in and he’s down.

Not a shabby buck, in my opinion. 42A6E81E-09C7-4408-AB86-26DEFC5C056F.jpeg
