.22 bolt guns

Hey guys, I got the barrel in yesterday afternoon. I installed it, stripped the old bedding and bedded the new barrel. I've gotta tell ya, the Kidd barrel was a TIGHT fit. With the proper bedding of the lug and receiver, I may be able to truly free float the barrel without any sag.

In any case, I ran out to the range this morning and finally got to shoot the rimfire match. Again, shot at 50 yards using ARA target with everyone shooting Wolf Match Target. I sighted the rifle in and shot. For what it's worth, I shot a 6570, which I don't think is bad. The wind was KICKING and freaky.

One thing I noticed about shooting the 10/22 though, is that you really have to drive it. The slap of the bolt when it cycles really shakes the rifle and you have to hold it steady. I'm wondering if a buffer will help.

TonyAngel,
Excuse my ignorance, but 6570 out of how many possible points?

I can vouch that the wind here has been up lately. Friday it was very constant. During the week it was gusty.

Ok, 7500 possible points. Just curious as to what the high score was as well.

It sounds like you did well to me. What kind of rest did you use?

TonyAngel, if you have not done this try two things. Stabilize the firing pin. A number of ways to do it. I took a rolled pin that was a tad oversized for the slot the firing pin runs in. I tapped the pin in lengthwise, trapping the firing pin. The FP still runs free but will hit the same place on the cartridge every time. This inconsistent hit will cause flyers.
The second thing is to fix the headspace. Factory headspace is way too loose allowing the cartridge to "wallow" between the bolt face and the barrel face. The normal headspace performed by any reputable 10-22 shop will be .0425". Any good machine shop can do this. You are simply removing metal from the bolt face and keeping everything square. The factory can be as much as .0450".

The flyers do not speak to bedding other than loose bedding. Most of us pillar bed the action and float the barrel but for a couple of inches in front of the receiver.

The 10-22 is super sensitive to torque or lack thereof. There probably will be a sweet spot on the action screw.

I also pinned the action by using the rear TG hole with a post screw all the way through the stock. Solid. This is a picture of a pinned stock using both TG holes. Not mine.

WNTFW, yes, the possible is 7500. I didn't do badly, but the owner of the range was really on today and he shot a 7400 with his Remington 40X.

Since it was my first day out with the rifle, I wasn't paying as much attention to the wind as I was paying attention to trying to figure out how the rifle liked to be shot. As for my method of shooting, I mixed it up between using a front bag and a bipod. I did a lot better with the bipod. I know that if I'm going to get serious about the benchrest type of shooting, I'll need to get a proper front rest, but my current dominant interest lies elsewhere and I just see shooting rimfire as a sort of practice.

Red Cent, I did have a few fliers. I was thinking about ordering a new bolt from Kidd, but I'm interested in your suggestion. I may throw my bolt in my mill and see about the headspace. I suppose I should measure the headspace first and see where I am right now.

T/A,
I know what you mean. I am not too interested in using a front rest. I do use a bipod at times. Essentially nothing more that what I consider portable. My 700 is at the limit for field use. The 40X is a pretty hefty .22.

The firing pin mod has proven itself also. Firing pin strikes that are inconsistent lead to different ignition. The 22 is infamous for its inconsistency in ignition, especially from the inexpensive brands. As in most disciplines, you seek to do the mechanics the same way everytime.

Well, I got to get out to the range today AGAIN. What a great weekend it's been. Anyway, I discovered that my scope was screwed up. I wasn't paying too much attention yesterday, but when I got back to the range today, I sat down to start shooting and realized that my reticle was canted.

It was a bummer, since it was a Vortex PST and wasn't cheap; not to mention that this is going to be its second trip back to Vortex. I wonder if I may have done better yesterday with a different scope. Oh well, so I pulled a Nightforce off of one of my other rifles and threw it on the 10/22. Just my luck, the NF wouldn't focus down to 50 yards. I shot anyway. My cheek weld is pretty consistent, so not being able to set the parallax wasn't too much of a setback.

I'm kind of hyped. I got about six different loads to try and found one that shoots almost as well as Wolf Match Target and it's bulk ammo. It was the Federal Auto Match. 325 rounds for $15. The next best for accuracy was Remington Sub Sonic HPs. $7 for 100. At least I know that I have a couple of options for fairly accurate plinking. I literally spent the whole day just covering my groups with 1" pasters and reusing the same targets and I finished up the afternoon popping off shot shell hulls off of the back stop at 100 yards.

Funny thing is that I didn't even pull any of my centerfire rifles out of my truck. I put over 500 rounds through the 10/22. Oh, I did pull the .357 16" lever gun out for a while. I couldn't resist doing that.

I'm going to order the bolt from Kidd. That's gonna come headspaced already with the firing pin pinned. I'll update after the next range trip. I just rebedded the whole stock, so we'll see how it all works out.

Glad to hear that the rifle is shooting the way you want. While I wouldn't be happy about it either, at least your scope is from a reputable manufacturer (with excellent CS).

:)

you're right about their CS, but what disturbs me is that it is going to be the second trip back to Vortex. on the first trip, they tore it apart and checked everything out. Good CS is great, but at this point, it doesn't do much for me. I'm just not going to have any confidence in that scope, considering that they've already gone through it and declared everything to be A ok.

I know what you mean, CS is only as good as the final product. It does you no good if they keep it more than you do. :banghead: Hopefully, you just hit it wrong and all will be well from here on out. I really like Vortex products, so I hope that they keep their stuff together (both literally and figuratively).

:)

Oh, I've been a big fan of Vortex myself. This experience has just been a disappointment. I'm sure that they'll make it right, I just don't know what I'm going to do for a scope next weekend.

I do have to say that this rimfire bug has me bad. I went to sleep thinking about it. I woke up thinking about. I'm sitting here writing about it and trying to figure out a way to get back to the range today.

Welcome to "the sickness". Yep, you're screwed. Hope you get your scope fixed.

I've been real happy with my StrikeFire but only had it four or five months.

I've been frothing over GSG-522's all week. :D

+1, see sig line for a way to blow off steam between formal matches. ;)

I've been frothing over GSG-522's all week.
I have one (well actually an older GSG-5, but they are essentially the same carbine), and while it is a blast to plink with and has proven surprisingly accurate despite the paper thin bbl (it's no tack driver, but more than good enough for plinking) I still have mixed feelings about it. I have been having feeding problems with it from time to time (most likely culprit is magazines...which are factory ones).

:)

Most mass produced rifles will benefit from some fine tuning. My 10/22 is a blast to shoot and accurate.but needed some adjustments. A few years ago I did alot of checking on the internet .22 matches and with other shooters before buying a new CZ 452. After free floating the barrel and some breaking in it is extremely accurate. I did have scope trouble as well.
Keep us posted on how your 10/22 is doing, or if you try something else.

T/A,
I will be making a trip to Bayou Dragon soon. Indoors 50 yds in Crown Pointe. If you want to come I will let you know the details. Probably be on a Thu/Fri.

Well, my bolt from Kidd will be hear by Thursday. I'm hoping that this will be the last of it for this rifle. Now I just have to get this scope thing sorted out. I emailed Vortex yesterday and still nothing. I hope I have time to get on the phone during business hours. Email is usually the way I communicate when I'm busy, since I always have my Ipad with me.

WNTFW, I hate shooting indoors. Do you ever get out to Nick's in Garyville? What the heck. If you go this Friday, let me know. I'll meet you out there, if I can. Thursday is a no go.

T/A,
Indoors is not my favorite either. I like to shoot as many different environment as possible, even low light.
No, I have not been to Nick's. With not being a member or shooting in a match there it was easier for me to go other places. I would go to Palo Alto and Gonzales (Sheriff's office) and shoot in matches. I will probably be shooting in St. Bernard on a regular basis soon.
Thanks for the invite. I won't make it this week.
