.22 Bulk Pack - Is accuracy possible?

We don't have Dynapoints here. CCI minimags I believe are available from a sporting place (not regular Big5 etc etc, just a sporting place) and Federal Automatches at the gunstore/indoor range.

I pay 17.99 for a brick of Federal bulk, Golden bullets, Cyclone, Win XPERT22, or CCI Blazer 40gr RN --- on sale. Off sale they're about 23 or so, hence I only buy when they're on sale. WWB 9mm 115gr? ugh, *checks reciept* 32.99 off sale, 25.99 on sale.

EDIT: 29.00 for a brick of Dynapoints? Ugh...no way I plan on getting that. That's almost the same price as Stingers!

50yd 10shot group from my Biathlon Basic with Winchester Xperts unsorted bulk.

The xperts shoot great out of this rifle, but when the wind kicks up it kicks my arse.

Ouija - seem to be missing a picture?

Those Win XPERT22 rounds -- do you get a "PEANT" of a regular sound, and about once a mag or so "PHUNT" sounding weak?

Steve - damn that is cheap. That works out to .00278 dollar a round (.278 cents). I'm paying .036 dollar/round for the golden bullets (3.6 cents).

I believe I actually shot some of those out of mine. Reed I believe was the name of it, similar graphics as that but it was a dinky little 50round sample pack with half the ammo gone. How did it do? Not exceedingly well...

Accuracy is definitely possible. It's not match ammo, but through my Marlin 60, I get pretty decent groups from whatever I put through it.

My 10/22, not so much. I sold it.

I shot a SINGLE dime sized 5 shot group at 50 yards with a Savage MKII with a cheap Bushnell scope. Ammo used was cheap Federal bulk. I have not been able to reproduce those groups but the savage generally shoots Ping-Pong ball sized groups, sometimes a little smaller. Not bad for a $125 gun with a $50 scope and cheap ammo. My winchester 190 shoots about as well as the Savage but the trigger really holds it back. As long as I can hit a squirrel head out to 40 yards, I'm happy

I've heard people claim if you measure the rim thickness and sort for the same thickness, you can tighten up groups a lot.
We tried that while practicing for 50m compitition but it made no discernable difference.

That cartridge weight difference in the bulk-pack bullets is frightening. 2.4g difference in that light of a cartridge is 4.8% & that's unacceptable for target shooting or hunting. It's sure fine for plinkin' though.

I didn't get out to the range today, but I did weigh up some more. The lightest I've found yet is 49.6 grains.

I do appreciate the input about different makes of reasonably accurate .22LR ammunition though! In a month or two when my budget allows I'll probably pick some up. Until then, I still have two bricks of Remington!

I weighed 100 bullets from Federal Cartridge (circa 1960-1965). These were given to me by my aunt or Grandma both of whom worked there. They were allowed to buy "seconds" and that's what my brother & I got for X-mas and B-Days every year - lots & lots of bullets.

Remember, these are Early '60s "seconds" :

Grains : #

52.5 : 04
52.4 : 22
52.3 : 21
52.2 : 11
52.1 : 29
52.0 : 04
51.9 : 06
51.8 : 02

That's not too bad. The total sample was 52.15g +/- 0.35g (0.67% variance)

By not using the 52.5, 52.0, 51.9 or 51.8g bullets, you'd have 84% of the total sample within +/- 0.20g (0.40% variance).

After the vast difference in weights that K5mitch found, I'd conclude that .22 rounds are not up to the quality control of 45 year-old "seconds" that were sold off for pennies on the dollar! :barf:

k5mitch,
What did your 14th bullet weigh?
I only calculated 2.5 deviation out of 13?

I've gone to Eley Sport pretty much for the rifles. The Rem bulk had too many FTF's and seemed erratic. The Federal has not the FTF's and seems a little more consistent. I use Fed in my 22 rf handguns.

Remy Golden bulks turn all of my weapons into a mess, and seems to be generally unreliable.

Federal bulk is more than reliable and fairly consistent, I use it for fun. I step up to Fed 510 when I feel like taking things a bit more seriously. My Mark III slabside loves either!

But since this is the rifle board, I have to say my rifle loves CCI Shorts more than anything. But it gets Fed 510 just the same as my pistols.

Remingtons are the only cheap bullets I shoot. Feds and Wins all cause my guns to jam. I never have any issues with Rems.

The Rem "Golden Bullets" work just fine in my MkII. Almost everyone else at the club hates them. The much more expensive Remington target ammo in the square plastic yellow box runs about 5 - 10% duds -- as in they still won't fire after 3 firing pin strikes. That's not just in my gun, that's anybody's.

CCI Blazers are OK, and so are Federal bulk pack (I think they might be the same thing now.)

But I have switched to CCI Mini-Mags (in the long skinny plastic box of 100) almost exclusively. They go "Bang" every time, and they don't cost that much more than Golden Bullets.

I think what I'll do is not buy another brick of Rem. G.B. and get try out some match ammo. Filling up a 5.56 ammo can from Uncle Sam as my ammo reserve. (cramming 9mm and 223 in there too as a grab-n-go ammo reserve)

How are your match ammos doing?

I found that when I get a dud the best thing is to just rack the bolt and keep moving. I once put a Remington Cyclone cartridge through five re-strikes to see if it would touch off. Nothing, so after a few more with multiple re-strikes I concluded that a dud round isn't worth saving since mine seems to be pounding the case rim hard enough.

Gotta try some of that Automatch and Minimags...

Sunday at the range

Out of 300 remington golden bullets, we had 1 dud, no flyers, split between a 10/22 and and a savage semi/auto. forget the model. Zero at 50 yards (slightly high) hit the 100 yard target (dead on) and the ringing the steel plate at 200 yards, ( aim high). And getting funny looks from the guys that are looking through $1000 plus scopes. Followed that with a Marlin 22m bolt action, zeroed at 100 yds (slightly high) remington cheapies. Made the steel plate ring at 200 yards, easily. Then just for giggles I pulled out the mossberg ATR 100 in .270 dressing (bolt action), with 130 grain remingtons, aimed at the 200 yrd metal plate, Did I mention, No bipods, or no bench rests, with a 5 to 7 mph cross wind (left to right). Anyway, back to the mossberg .270 Pulled the trigger, got a definant claaang out of the 200 yrd steel plate, 2 more with the cheap remington ammo, and to more loud clangs, noticed everyone appeared to be looking at the 200 yrd plate, but not firing, I zoomed the scope up to 16x and looked at 3 perfect holes in a steel plate at 200 yrd's, with a 1.5 inch group. I was embarased. I damaged a steel target. Later I found, that's what there for. By the way, my wife shoots way better than me. This also a testament to my grandfather teaching me to shoot, and the US Army spending alot more to refine those skills. Scouts Out. What ever you have to use, know it, and use it well.

I have gone through 3 boxes of the remington gold bullets with zero ftfs. My Neos eats 'em up.....they are a bit dirty though but the Neos can shoot dirty all day long.

jon,

Nice there...

I noticed the golden bullets have the lowest drop at 100yds when sighted at 50 than the other boolits. Cyclone is the worst I believe, it is around 5.6" drop, the G.B. are 1.8" according to the box.
