I currently own a Ruger Mark II which my GF didn't like since it was too heavy, and can be twitchy with unjacketed ammo. I am looking to get another .22 that will be much lighter and far less picky about its ammo for her to shoot when we go to the range. Does anyone have recommendations? I think I want to stick with a semi, but am open to other ideas. My initial thoughts were a Walther P22 . Thanks.

Can't beat the Ruger's but next I think would be one of the Buckmark models. If she wants lighter, look at one of the "Lite" models. Aluminum bbls rather than the steel so it'll be a bit less muzzle weighted for her.

I have a P22 and have shot my first 650ish rounds through it.

It is picky for ammo. Fortunately it liked the cheapest stuff. Remington Golden Bullets HP, which is only a high velocity ammo. After finding the ammo it liked it was simply a matter of swapping out the front site so POA = POI, had to go with 1 site shorter (from 3 to 2).

The other thing I had to do was go through the gun by cleaning it and making sure all screws were tight. The gun groups well and I have had no issues in 500 Remington Golden Bullets. The gun did not like the more expensive standard velocity ammo and did not like bare lead.

My wife likes the gun it is quite light and had a small grip which fits her hand.

I'm afraid you're going to have a really hard time beating that Ruger for a less finicky .22 LR semiauto.

Beretta Neo maybe?

But honestly if what you really really want is a gun which will feed any kind of ammo without hiccuping, you want a revolver.

I have a mkiii but i get to shoot a p22 very often and it likes that cheap stuff in the 550rd box remington or federal plus i have shot cci stingers through it and none of it has ever had a problem, the p22 is a quality piece at a cheap price/ cheap to shoot, and its fun to shoot, also its a little small so it should fit in a womens/ childs hands well

sw22a is very light. grips aren't the greatest but there are nice replacements available.

my father has one, it only likes federal and remington bulk pack, don't know how other ones are.

what about an ultralight upper for your Mk II? i think pac-lite makes them?

i second the pac-lite idea from tactical solutions. my father got a barrel from them, very light. you won't have to worry about new magazines, or anything, just have them change the barrel out.

I was actually looking at picking up a cheap MK III and then sticking the Pac-Lite onto it. I suppose I should take her to the store to get a feel for them. Thanks for the advice all.

If she wants a carry gun the Pheonix Arms .22 has improved dramatically over past years.
Or Beretta Bobcat is a neat little .22
Taurus makes the equivalent of the Bobcat, but can't remember the model name.

Will she be using said 22 for self-defense?

If not, a Ruger Bearcat SA 22 is a good option to look at. They are a bit lighter/smaller than the famous Single Six. As for the P22, I don't own one but it seems they either work fine or they are very picky. I've often thought of buying one of the picky ones off someone to practice tap-rack-ready for cheap :D . But if it is just a range gun, some hiccups aren't a big deal IMO.

Not for self defense. Only for plinking when we go to the range. She didn't like my Mark II (too heavy and ammo picky) and anything larger just scared her. (e.g. she didn't like my Kimber 1911). So something that isn't picky, reasonably sized for a 5'7" girl, and light.

I'll second the Ruger Bearcat. Or one of the smaller Browning Buckmark pistols if she prefers autos. I LOVE buckmarks.

Let me cast another vote for the Walther P-22. I think the pickiness was confined to the early models and has been worked out in latest production.

Light - just 17 oz
Eats any old ammo you put in the magazine
Very well made
Easy to operate
Quite accurate
Exremely reliable
Easy to clean/maintain
Just about perfect for small hands
Not cheap, but a good value
