im heading to appleseed the end of august and im taking a .22 and my .308 enfield to try to shoot to the full 400m they offer

my .22lr is a browning takedown which feeds thru the stock, its not exactly my choice of a .22 but it was a gift from my dad so its what u use

would i be better off borrowing a clip fed bol of semi from my brother in law for appleseed?

ok i just dont like the load in the butt feature it just feals unsafe to me that and its awkward to me

It's mostly a convenience thing, but you can still be safe without using a mag fed rifle. I highly recommend a semi/mag fed gun, but in all honesty you can use what ever you have.

A semi auto is better than a bolt gun because you won't have to move as much, reducing the chance of changing your shooting position and most likely tightening up your groups a little bit.

First... just go. The rifle you use is much less important than people think it is. If there is one bit of gear that is more important than any other, it's a good web sling, other than that, what you shoot really doesn't matter that much. The point is to learn the techniques, not to score well.

That said, a tube feed can slow down the line, if the RSO waits for you, or cut into your shooting time, if he/she doesn't. On stage 2 (standing to seated, 10 shots, 2 targets, mandatory mag change, 50 seconds), if you eat up 10 or 15 seconds loading after the RSO calls 'FIRE', it's going to hurt!

The single most important thing to bring is a positive attitude! Have fun!

I showed up with a Nylon 66. You load it through the buttstock. All of the instructors had like 2 LTRs each, and let people borrow them. I am sure if you went to appleseed's forum, you could find your instructors and ask to borrow a LTR if you want. Re-loading a tubular mag would be nearly impossible during the rapid fire stages, much less maintaining you NPOA. You may fire the QDADT skipping the mag changes, but you will not make rifleman even if you score 211+. If you are attending with the serious goal of making rifleman, get or borrow a detachable-magazine rifle. If you are starting out, and going to the shoot to learn, don't sweat it.
Also, at the TX appleseed, they don't take shooters to the KD range unless there are at least a few shooters who are ready (on the verge of rifleman).

Pick up a Ruger 10/22. 10rd mag fed semi-auto. The ruger mags are cheap and you can buy at most gun shops and big box outdoor stores.

My locat gun shop had one for 219.00. Walmart had one for 198.00

And if it is taken care of it will last for years. There is also a major aftermarket support from stock replacement parts to crazy expensive custom parts.

The most important thing, as was stated earlier, was to show up.

As far as the rifle, I would recommend a good used 10/22. The new ones are still recovering from the plastic junk and may not be precisely ideal.

the deal with my rifle is my dad won it in the 60s and never fired it because he didnt like the stock fed tube so about november of 2007 he gave it to me and ive fired it about 3 times each time about 75-100 rounds and i dont think its broken in yet and maybe thats why it jams but it doesnt have sling mounts either

i would consider buying a .22 if i had money but im doing appleseed to get my cmp qualifications up for my 18th birrthday on sept 2nd so i am scrapped for cash since im saving for a garand

how much of a disadvantage will i be at using a bolt?

i know i can use my brother in laws he has 2 bolt actions and then he has 2-3 marlin model 60s whcich of the 3 would i be better off with?

im good with all of them so that isnt a big deal

should i use iron sight or optics?
