.22 LR vs pellet gun

The thing I like about pump guns is you don't have to pump ten times. I have .22's and .177's (all Crossman) and it's nice to be able to go out in the back yard and plink at fifty feet with very little noise. The neighbors don't mind. They bring their kids.

Accuracy

Another testament to air gun accuracy
This is the test target that came with my FWB pistol.
Five shots at 10 meters

I don't shoot mine more... because I don't have one. However, I did just order one. ;)

I'm getting one mainly because I can not shoot any of my guns on my property since I live in town. Also, here in IL any air rifle 22 caliber or bigger is considered a firearm, so I went with a .177 break action. I wanted something mainly to be able to target shoot and to use for pests if I absolutely have to. The fact that the "ammo" is alot cheaper is a nice bonus to go along with those things.

I have had a Benjamin .22 air rifle for decades, it was my first rifle and finally picked up an "adult" air rifle this year (rws 34). It is impressive over the Benjamin, I have killed crows out to 98 yards but 100 yard groups are in the 3.5" range most of the time. I have many .22's that shoot better than that and they cost less.

That said I will likely get a PCP once I can convince myself to let go of the better part of $1000 for an air rifle.

For $399 you get a Benjamin discovery rifle and pump. No need to spend 1000 unless you have money to waste. Mine shoots half inch at 50 yds

I have a Benjamin Discovery in .22 and a Marauder Poly
in .25. Both are great shooters but I love the Marauder
Poly in .25. Hits hard enough at 50 yards to kill coyotes
with one shot. I know. I've killed coons, coyotes, squirrels,
rabbits, and snapping turtles, all within 50 yrds. Haven't
had a chance to try it any further out.

Here's a group at 35 yrs I shot last month.

1000 .25 pellets will run you about $30 bucks, I pick up
a thousand every other month or so. Seen videos of guys
shooting pigs with it making one shot kills. And quiet, this
thing makes so little noise it's astounding. I'd say it's 50%
quieter than the .22 cal Discovery. My Pom is gun shy and
he doesn't even know it when I shoot the .25 but will run
and hide when I shoot the .22.

BTW: Those measurements are outside edge to outside
edge, not center to center.

Shee-oot, that's quite a gun. I've been wanting a .177, but I think this warrants a lookiesee.

Those Mrods are nice air rifles. Can't go wrong there!

I tend to favor the .22 caliber as a compromise between .177 and .25. It can be difficult to find decent .25 pellets locally if you I need to, but .22 is always around. Cost is notably lower as well on the .22.

Cannot argue with the .25 though... It will kill things lol, AND reach out. 25-30ish grains is a typical .25 pellet weight, some heavier ones out there through. I was pretty close to getting a .25 when I bought my .22 talon...

"Did u have a herd of invading turtles or were u making soup?
Nice 25 tho"

No, just a small fish pond I built (1/3 acre) last summer
and stocked with catfish and bluegill. Dang snapper will
decimate a small pond before it can start repopulating
if you don't kill off the snappers that will migrate in. They
are tough critters. The .22 will kill them but the .25
does it more humanely.
I really like my Mrod.

What you say is true but I've stockpiled thousands of .25.
:neener: Every once in awhile, Pyramid will have a sale
like: buy 1 get 1 free; and I'll load up. You'd be amazed at
how quiet the .25 Mrod is.
Although I've never shot the Talon, I've read a lot of good
things about it, just too "new tech" for me. ;) I'm too old
school.

Yes, one can kill a pig with an airgun. It sure as shootin' aint the best choice.
Those videos remain stunts.
I am a great fan of PCPs....I have had a Sam Yang big bore for some years now in .457". An air rifle that has recoil.....and it ain't quiet. It is, however, great fun, accurate and cheap to shoot. (once you have all the "stuff" that is.) I cast my own lead round balls and slugs so my cost per shot (160 ft.lbs ME) is zero.

BigBL87, Illinois actually changed the verbiage of the law that defines "firearms" in regards to air guns so that it now reads (in defining what is EXCLUDED from the state's definition of a firearm):

"Any pneumatic gun, spring gun, paint ball gun or B-B gun which either expels a single globular projectile not exceeding .18 inch in diameter or which has a maximum muzzle velocity of less than 700 feet per second"

So my Benjamin Sheridan .22 air rifle, which shoots just under 600fps would NOT be classified as a "firearm" anymore. Having said that, most municipalities have ordinances against discharging air rifles within city limits.

I love practicing the fundamentals in my backyard with a good pellet gun.

Here's my HW-55:

I used this for my Valentine's Day card for certain special people. Ancient Feinwerkbau .177, equivalent to R-something, with original Beeman scope, 10 yards, five shots. Forgot pellet brand.
