Unlike 22 long rifle bullets, I have very little experience with 22 magnum rounds. Wally world had two brands that sold very cheap, the winchester dynapoint magnum and the winchester super X magnum. Are magnum rounds like the bulk ammo that we purchase in 22lr where the QC and QA are not as great and their may be a lot of duds that do not fire? Should I be purchasing the more expensive brands that go for $13.99 instead of $7.77?

These will mainly be for plinking and more plinking.

^+1 You get alot less duds in .22 WMR than .22lr, even with the cheap copper washed dyna points. The super X are really top notch by comparison and should give you no troubles.

"...Should I be purchasing..." Nope. You should be trying a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. Just like you do for LR ammo. The price of it means nothing.
There is no .22 Magnum in their Dynapoint brand line. A Wildcat brand Dyna Point is a plated bullet. A Super-X is a jacketed bullet.

Dynapoint IS a cartridge in the Winchester MAGNUM line. It has a plated bullet rather than a jacketed bullet, and is loaded to a velocity significantly less than the Super-X magnum round (but still greater than regular long rifle cartridges). Many folks have found it to be a quiter and more suitable round for edible small game when shot from magnum firearms. Some folks have found it to also be less accurate than full-power magnum rounds, although it seems to do well in some guns. The Super-X Magnum is the gold standard of full-power magnum loads and a great choice for long range and varmint shooting.

Those are both good places to start. Like Sunray said, try all different kinds and find out what your gun likes the best. One of mine was really accurate with the CCI Maxi Mags, which aren't much more expensive then the Winchester. Wally World usually has them, and most decent sporting goods stores will too.

Not to hijack but does anyone know what company is making a .22WMR with pistols in mind? I remember seeing something about it somewhere, in regards to the PMR-30. It was supposed to offer better expansion outta a pistol length barrel.

Oh and before I forget, I've had good luck with the Armscor soft heads, they're in the same price range as the Winchester ammo, IF you can find some.

I've heard that conjectured in another forum. I tend to doubt that companies like Hornady would be rolling out ammo for shorter barrels specifically based on the PMR-30, for which they prolly couldn't have anticipated a necessarily huge market or sustained sales.

I actually think the advent over the last couple of years of 7-shot J-frame sized .22 WMR snubbies (for people wanting higher capacity snubbies and/or lower recoiling ones) was the primary impetus for this new development.

Just IMHO...

Sunray, 22wmr Dynapoints DO exist...it was what I used to use with my old 22wmr Derringer. They just may not be available in your neck of the woods is all.

22wmr out of a pistol is a little hotter than standard 22lr out of a rifle.

I like the CCI 22 mag the best. I like the Winchester Super X but I have had some duds with it. I still haven't had a CCI dud yet. Like others have said, just find the one that shoots best for you and stick with it.

My .22 magnum handgun (6") gives energy figures about 20% higher than most high velocity long rifles do out of a rifle.

When comparing handgun to handgun, my 6" magnum revolver has well over TWICE the enery levels of my 6" handgun chambered for .22 long rifle. This is probably the most useful comparison: apples to apples. Comparing a handgun to a rifle is always an apple to orange comparison. I did some of this testing over my chrono a couple of years ago and it can be found doing a search over at rimfirecentra.

.22mags. tried them all !

Spent way too much on .22mags.trying to figure out what shoots best in my 597 Rem.Mag. After all was said and done ,the CCI 's win out for my gun on accurate, dependable rounds and the cost was as good as any and better than most. The solid pt. CCI's Max mag shoot just a little better than the hollow pts. in this gun. I have seen the same results in a Marlin bolt action too that a friend of mine owns. Second best is the Remington Ballistic Tip bullets with the Win.Supreme being the last place champion of over a dozen others I've tried. They may shoot good in another gun,but not in my 597Mag.I'd save some money and try the CCI's first if you own a .22mag. and go from there. And as for CCI's in the .22 long R.,they shoot very well in my .22 LR. too.with the mini mag being the best.

Silver Reserve info

I just bought a 20ga.S.R. Mossberg International and have read quite a few good and not so good reviews. As I have found so far is that the main problems reported sound like mostly shooter error with the closing of the actions and not really the gun itself. Also the newer guns now have stronger firing pins installed in them from the factory. With proper maintenance and some careful use in puting the barrels on the receivers and not dry firing,it sounds as if there should't be much if any problems with this gun .Any responce to someone with updated info would be helpful. Thanks!

I have several .22 MAG firearms and most like the Super X and CCI offerings best. My Automag II however will only tolerate Super X and PMC as nothing else will eject reliably if at all. The Dynapoints require a rod and hammer to remove them from the chamber every time.:banghead:

The .22 mag Win dynapoint round duplicates the old .22 special as they both shoot 45 grain heads at 1550 fps giving 255 ft pds. I have never had a .22 mag not fire in rifle or revolver. I still take deer with some 1980's winchester HP ammo. I bought lots at $2.10 a box. 40 grain CCI, Fed, and Win all shoot great with Win. 40 grain doing 1 and 1/4 inch at 100 yards for 5 shots. Try the 30 grain hornady red tip shell. Hornady says it will probably shoot the best from any .22 mag. I had good luck on varmits with it but it is too explosive for deer. Have fun with your new gun and bangaway.`

My brother went ahead and ordered the Keltec PMR 30 from CDNN but won't be available for a few weeks. I just thought I would get a jump on things and start buying some 22 mags. Seems like the best thing to do is by several brands and find out what each pistol like. I love this, more excuses to buy ammo...yeah!!!

I'm looking at a box of Winchester Dynapoint .22 Winchester Magnum RF, 45 gr Dynapoint bullet, UPC #020892 101579 in a 50 round box. It's a copper plated HP bullet. I have probably 3,000 rounds of this ammo in my stash, and I've fired probably 1,500 rounds of it and I really can't ever recall having a dud. I wish I could say that for .22 LR bulk pack stuff. Accuracy is good enough to kill tree rats and chipmunks and an occasional wabbit.

Medalguy, that seems to be the major concensus. There seems to be less duds in the 22 magnum rounds vs. the 22 lr rounds. I am hoping that the PMR 30 will not be as picky as the sig mosquito is, which seems to only shoot the CCI varmint mini-mags.

ms6852 - one slight problem with the Dynapoints - as they are less expensive, 45 grains instead of 40, "plated" instead of an actual "jacket", plus an uncertain muzzle velocity make this round better reserved for pistols and close range.
Some of the higher priced ammo, such as Remington's AccuTip hunting round with the polycarbonate tip (like Nosler's) might be a little more accurate because of that tip but they are over 50% higher in price than the Dynapoints ($10 vs. $17). The AccuTip's are also only 33 grain bullets, making them more prone to wind drift and less downrange energy.
Of the six types of .22 Mag ammo I have tried in both revolver (a Ruger Convertible) and a bolt action rifle (Marlin), there seemed to be little difference in the accuracy. I also had no dead loads in the rounds I shot.
Good luck!
