I have never been a devotee of rifle scopes and in my 25 years of shooting I have avoided them. However, the little gun club down the road is organizing a competition using scoped .22's. I have a Marlin bolt-action (with the little grooves on the top of the reciever) and would like to put a cheapo 4X scope on it for the competition. If I buy a scope how do I know what kind of rings I should purchase? I went to Wal-Mart today and could not figure out what to buy.

BH1917, Sounds like your having fun and not looking to spend alot of money and thats ok they have weaver dual rings. If possible don't use the see through type it can drift if they get bumped or hit the weaver dual type are ok I got them for my garden rodent problem and are ok for that the rings will depend on the tube size on the scope you are purchasing but wm will have the ones that will fit on the marlin..... good luck at your new competition shooting.....

i have a daisy powerline air rifle scope on my savage mkII.... it's a pretty clear scope and it costs about $28 at my local wally's......... i got my first one for $18 and the next weekend they went up ten bucks... i wished i had two in the first place!! the rings are on the scope and it fits the grooves on my savage reciever so i bet you'd be good to go with that............... the other inexpensive scope i can mention is the simmons 4by 32 .22 scope that i used on my 1022 custom when it was first done..... the first time i had it out it shot one hole groups at 40-50 yards with the simmons off sand bags and a bench....................

two things; get an air rifle rated scope, they are usually cheapest; don't know why- they can take more recoil....secondly your scopering bases, should either be double wide, with 2 screws going through the bottom, so they have extra wide bite on the rail, or you need to get kwik site, tip off blocks. they look like little leggo pieces, and when you put these on first, they are super stable, then you can attach any bases you want, to these blocks, they will make your scope sit up real high though.
Lastly , going to optics planet as mentioned above, this is the best scope made, for under 50 bucks; it is the best scope made for under 100 bucks, really.
it is break bbl rated, spring piston rated adult air rifle rated. and comes with rings and mounts allready, but the mounts as you can see, are only 1 screw wide. Marlin are famous for ' scope walking' which is why I say to look for 2 screw wide bases, or get the kwik site blocks.

sometimes the big box stores, have the above scope allready, in a hard plastic blister pack, with ear muffs and glasses, the deal of the century. so look at academies, gander mtn, bass pro, wallyworld, etc., in your area. You might get lucky. If not, then get something that is air rifle rated, spring piston rated, break bbl rated, if you can find it. at the very least, spring piston rated. those little, tiny, pencil type scopes will not make you happy.
