Defensively speaking, you shoot to STOP and not to kill. If you shoot to kill and do so, then you are a murderer and will be treated as such by the court system.
This is not always the case and with the castle doctrine and the stand your ground laws coming out, a true Self-Defense will be found as that and you will not be prosecuted.

The "caste doctrine" as you call it already exhists in MA whereby in the event of a home invasion the occupant is not expected to flee his home. If you shoot this person, he'd better be armed and in your home and not in the yard, he'd better be shot in the front and not in the back. I believe the "stand your ground" law doesn't exist in MA, only if the action was reasonable and prudent, and you acted in defense of your life or the life of another and there was no other alternative but to use deadly force :)
Let's just say that killing a bad guy comes as a result of having aimed center of mass and double tapping him in a genuine and sincere attempt to stop him from causing serious bodily injury or death to yourself or another after any and all reasonable alternatives either where not present and/or did not present themselves during the encounter.

Anyone who disdains .22 because you can't kill a man with it is missing the entire point of shooting and should find another hobby.

The gun is what made us free men, protects life and liberty, Brother !
There is no doubt as to weather or not a .22 will kill a person. This is a forum, right ? AND I PERSONALLY LOVE THE .22, ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL AND SHOOTING IS A WONDERFUL HOBBY THAT I ENJOY VERY MUCH.
Lets talk about weather or not cow farts are depleteing the ozone layer, I don't care.

lol, I never said a .22 can't kill somone..... any caliber... hell even a bb gun can kill.
I happen to like the .22, I've put more rounds through my .22 rifle than all my other guns put together. I enjoy shooting such round, it is fun as hell. But that's just it: for fun.
I'm not doging any round. I've carried for 10 years for self-defense; not as a luxury or because I can but because I have to. I live in a country where if I'm not mistaken is ranked number 1 in the world as the most dangerous country (crime/murder wise- over 48,000 murders in as little as over 6 years- hell, we're not even at war). I'm just being honest with my replies to inform present gun owners that carry a .22 for self-defense and future gun owners who are planning to buy a .22 as a self-defense weapon, that such caliber cannot be relied upon as a self-defense caliber. Hence, it should not even be consired at all for self-defense......

A standard , high vel 40 grn 22 bullet, will penetrate a 2x4 at 200 yds.

I just dont buy that the .22 bullet has enough energy after traveling 200 yards to go through. I would think it would bounce right off with maybe a mark.

And I LOVE my rimfires....but come on.....

So anyways, I bought this old H&R single shot .22 years ago, used for $60. and love it. Nothing I need to worry about with all the fussing, cleaning oiling ect just a decent little .22.

When studying forensics my instructor held up a couple photos of a man who'd been shot right between the eyes from less than a foot away with a .22 (didn't specify short or LR) and asked us what was wrong with the pictures. One was the entrance wound, the other the exit.

What was wrong was the man was alive. He was an attendant at a mini-mart who was shot by a would-be robber. The bullet hit his skull but didn't penetrate, rode around between the scalp and skull to the back of his head and popped out. He never even lost consciousness, in fact he took the gun away from his assailant and was pistol-whipping him when the police arrived.

That leads me to believe a .22 isn't a self-defense round.

On the other hand...

I've heard stories of a Native American woman who dropped a large bear with one shot from a .22 to the eye.

I guess it just depends on how good a shot you are and if you know where to aim.

I saw video of a bad guy getting shot in the head from about 6"-8" w/ .38 spl. Once in the forehead and once in the top of the head as he charged the Police Off, and continue to fight.
Happy Hunting.........

I saw this video tape about 15 years ago when departments where considering moving away from the .38 spl. Too bad we all went from the frying pan to the fire by getting the hi cap 9mm. Thought being more firepower. Now it seems that everyone carries the .40S&W, I feel very good about that decision. Personally, I own a S&W .45 auto compact. Thin, light, very consealable and powerfull. And by the way welcome to the board........

I gave my mother a 10/22 for HD.
Not because I believe in the round but because she is two afriad to shoot anyhting else except my Nagant, and my BIL yelled at me when I shot him with that.

The gun has one of those BSA red dots on it
I told her to center an intruder the best she could in the scope and empty the magazine.
And then run like hell before he caught her
