recently bought two fat 50 ammo cans and my first attempt at storing .223 ammo in them. where can i get some stripper clips for cheap (prefer milspec new or surplus). Also looking into the cardboard slips and bandoliers... thanks.

There are also thermold clips out there that work very well. They do not have the tabs on them like the military metal clips. I've been using the same set of 100 clips for the last four or five years with no sign that they're going to wear out.

I used to get them from Midsouth Shooters for cheap, but they're out of stock and a quick search showed other vendors but for a higher price. Worth a look.

I've ordered from Old Sarge's Drop Zone in the past. They have stripper kits as well as repack kits (strippers, cardboard, and bandoliers).

Good service but it has been a while since I have bought anything from them.

Stripper clips are neat. Don't forget the spoons (chargers/loaders/guides). Put one in an end pocket of each bandolier, in each ammo can, one in your pants pocket, and you can tape one anywhere out of the way on your AR. Practice loading mags with them until you've got it mastered. It's a bit tricky at first. Don't be surprised if you get a bloody finger or two the first few times. But storing ammo in stripper clips, in bandoliers, is the way the military usually does it. Space efficient and quick to bring into use. And cheap.

I see the utility of distributing ammo on stripper clips as long as a "spoon" guide is included, but to put loose or boxed ammo on clips seems a big waste of time to me.

I don't generally recommend anything made by ProMag but they make some mag loaders that work well:

I'd rather load boxed or loose rounds with this than load them on strippers and then load them into magazines later. I'd also rather carry extra loaded mags instead of a rather fragile bandoleer filled with stripper clips.

YMMV.

Lots of good deals on AR mags at the moment, check spare magazine prices before buying stripper clips.

Personal choice.

But, you can carry a lot of ammo on stripper clips in less space and weight than in mags. And you can load a mag with strippers in mere seconds. They work and have for nearly 50 years.

A bandolier holds 140 rounds on strippers. Nothing fragile about the setup. Soldiers have been dragging them around all over with no ill effect. That's typically how the ammo gets issued in the first place. Beyond 3-4 loaded mags, a bandolier is the way to carry extra ammo. I wouldn't want to carry another 7 20 rounder mags or 4 plus 30 rounders. Throw the bandolier over your shoulder and you hardly notice it's there.
