I'v just started to get into hunting and as of now I don't have the funds to buy a new gun. I know its a hot debate if its humane to use the .223 and my view is that if bow hunting is humane so is a .223. I just want to know if there is any update on .223 for 2011 in Va???

I just googled the state web site to be sure. It still says caliber must be above .23. So 223 is still not legal at this time, in VA.

Hard to compair a bow to a rifle bullet. Bows don't make much noise and deer don't release that they have been killed and some times run a few steps and look back to see what scared them and just fall over dead. Bullets have the energy transfer , shock. and noise will scare them to run. How about a h&r single shot rifle in 243 and bigger ,don't cost much and work well and see many in pawn shopes real cheap. Or maybe try to pickup a used bow for next season. You do have 7 or 8 months to look around. Many old bows are cheap and work well just not as fancy, as fast or as expensive as a new one. Best chaces in many areas for the bigger deer is during bow season anyhow. + it don't cost to shoot them alot. hehe

From what I have seen there has been no discussion of allowing anything smaller than .23 in Virginia either. They specifically mention proposed license fee changes though.

Depending on what county you hunt in, you might not be able to hunt with a rifle anyway.

Edit: I found a reference to the General Assembly debating a bill about it back in 2009, but it was shot down back then.
