I'm a new member returning to handloading after a few years absence. I unfortunately didn't keep my old records and can't recall my best powder for 55gr V Max, Rem brass, CCI. Will appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
Can't say best for your particular application, but let me be the first of a long list that will recommend H335, WW748, TAC, etc... H335 is very hard to beat (I use mag primers with it), and I have some great 55 grain loads using AA 2460. I prefer the ball propellants mentioned for ease of use, great metering, and an uncompressed load density of about 95-98%.
My 50gr VMax and 60gr VMax varmint cartridges are loaded with IMR4895. Works very well for me. 25.2gr and 24.2gr respectively. I'm not getting blazing speed, but they are accurate with the 60gr doing as well as 5/8" at 100 yards. And that's with ME shooting, so I know they have a little more in them.
I have to believe that it would work for the 55gr too.
I am pretty much much on board with what Galil says except that I have never tried Winchester 748. H-335 is hard to beat. Try 26.5 with the Sierra 52 grainer. I get sub 1/2MOA with that load out of my Savage. BLC-2 is right up ther with H-335 as is Tac. If you kind a good deal on Tac buy it. I bough 23 pounds when Midway had it on sale $10/lb I wish I had bought 50 pounds.:banghead: It is almost as good as H-335 in the 223 and it is almost as good as BLC-2 in the 204.
I stick to 50gr V-max bullets as these are the ones my rifle likes the best.
I like 748 for cool weather (Fall and winter) loads. For the spring and summer loads I like Accurate 2015 or Varget. These powders are less temp sensitive than 748 in my tests.
I have tried Benchmark and it is ok but not as good as 748or 2015.
for 55Gr v-max, 25Gr H335 has been a very accurate loade for my bolt .223 1:9. Hodgdon powder is what is most readily available to me so that is what I have mainly used.
I like H335 with great groups, but just tried Hodgdon Benchmark and the results were even better than 335. The groups crowded 1/4 inch groups. This is great, and it meters well. Have had good results with 4895 but does not meter worth a darn.
These are two of my favorites too! The H335 has given me remarkable accuracy with 55 grain match Bergers and 52 MatchKing Sierras. I would try it with the 55 VMAX too. Benchmark works extremely well for me for the 55 match and the 69 MatchKing.
Right at 23.0 grains Benchmark , CCI BR-4 ,gives excellent results in my 20" 1 in 9" twist 700LTR. H322 does very well too at the same charge weight and Rem 7 1/2 primers.
