I need a shellholder for a RCBS press for this cartridge , RCBS doesn't list one. Does anyone know of one that will work for me?

Nevermind , I found one. (Hornady).

Since I have your attention, does anyone have experience with this cartridge?

Comments , opinions? I know it was driven from the market by the 22 - 250 and may soon be "obsolete"

Luckily for us varmint hunters, many of the so called "obsolete" cartridges still have decent sized followings. I think the .225 Win is a nifty cartridge and you could probably get some good info on loads over on the Varminthunters.com forum.

I used to reload a 225 Win and I think I used a shellholder for a 3030. Chief aka Maxx Load

There is a ton of load data on the Hodgdon load data site. They list bullets weights from 40gr up to 60gr. I have never shot a 225 Winchester let alone loaded for it and don't know anyone who has so I can't help you with powder choices or bullet weights.

As for the 22-250 rendering the 225 Winchester obsolete, I doubt that will happen any time soon. I think the 22-250 was first developed buy Mr. Hodgdon as a Wildcat round about 70 years ago. It became a standard cartridge about 30 years later. If it hasn't made the 225 Winchester disappear yet it probably won't do so in the near future. (IMO of course)

Welcome to the forum..

AACD - I said the 22 - 250 "drove the .225 from the market" - paraphrased from wikipedia , I believe.

The soon to be "obsolete" comment is my own inference from the standpoint of availability of factory ammo - considering that there is currently only one manufacturer making only one load ( winchester) - for over $30 per box.

My speer book has load data that I'll start out with.

Thanks for comments everyone.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you wrote... I meant no harm.

How close in real life performance is the .225 Winchester to the 22-250 Remington? What rifle do you have that's chambered in .225 Win.? (any pics??) :D

BTW, in general be very careful about what you read on Wikipedia. Very often what's written there is incorrect since it's user generated without oversight.

Yeah, you read stuff like "first developed by Mr Hodgdon."

The .22-250 as we know it was established on the wildcat market by Jerry Gebby in the 1930s.
He registered the name "Varminter" but nobody would pay him for the trademark, they just stamped their barrels ".22-250" or the like. One version was known as the .22 W.O.S. for Wotkyns Original Swift, predating Winchester making the .220 Swift out of Lee Navy brass. Charles Newton had worked with it much earlier but with the .228" bullet of the Savage High Power. Harvey Donaldson would tell you he had a lot to do with it, too. But Gebby's main collaborator was J. Bushnell Smith.

AACD - no offence taken:)

Quoted from Speer reloading manual #14....

"Just a year after the .225 was introduced,Remington announced that it was going to commercialize the 22-250 , one of the most popular wildcat cartridges ever. The 22-250 was a more conventional case design with an established reputation for long range varmint performance and accuracy , and beat the .225 win. factory loads by 100fps. Other gunmakers opted for chamber for the 22-250 instead. With the exception of the Savage model 340 , no other major manufacturer ever chambered rifles for it. In one of the great ironies of the shooting industry , the .225 win. is facing obsolescence while the cartridge it was supposed to replace , the .220 swift , has made a strong comeback".

My brother - in law owns the .225. It came up during conversation the other day , he seems very fond of the rifle - and ammo is 30+$ per box.

The light bulb came on , buy him dies and bullets for Christmas and load him some rounds.

Performance - wise I suspect it's pretty close to 22 - 250 and .220 swift (the cartridge it was supposed to replace).

Anyway , I don't have any pictures , but I guess it must be a Win. model 70 or the aforementioned savage.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive , I really would like to hear from someone who owns / has experience with this rifle.
