Looking at getting some extra shellholders for my RCBS press and new hand priming tool. Thought about a kit instead of the RCBS individuals. Will all other brand kits work in the RCBS stuff or does it have to be original RCBS equipment?

I bought a Lee shellholder kit just to have all the extras around. They work just fine in my RCBS Rockchucker and hand priming tool. Just be careful when ordering as they make special shellholders for their handpriming tools, and they will not work in anything else.

From my experience, all RCBS shell hoders are interchangable. I have seen (and own) several with poor tolerances that were sloppy fits, but were "no name" shell holders and not RCBS or Lee ones.

You can use shell holders from any of the major manufacturers on your RCBS press. I've got them from RCBS, Lyman, Lee, C-H and Redding, and they all work. Just be advised that changing from one shell holder to another in the same caliber, even of the same brand, can change how far a case is pushed into a die. They're made to max./min. tolerances, and as long as they're within those parameters are considered "in spec.", but there may be a few thousandths of difference. It's not as critical with pistol calibers as it is with bottleneck rifle calibers, but is a fact of life.

Hope this helps.

Fred is dead on. There is as much difference between shell holders (and dies) of the same brand as there is between brands. And that's not much, because they are all cut to SAAMI specs.

They will all work on the press, no problem.

Some are going to have to be modded to work in the RCBS priming tool. The taper on the inside that sits down over the white and black plastic pieces differ somewhat. The only Lyman shell holder I had (5.7X28) also had to be ground down on the outside.

This is probably of no concern but wish i had general knowledge at the time. RCBS shell holders do not work with hornady accesories; due to the cam lock requiring a larger diameter center than other manufactures shell holders. Just in case you were looking at a case prep center, trimmer or concentricty guage made by Hornady.

Walkalong is correct. If you ever plan on using the RCBS APS priming tool, it comes with some little plastic inserts that fit into the bottom of the shellholder. The center hole at the bottom of the shellholder is shaped sort of like a funnel for the plastic insert. I know because I have an old 223 shellholder which has a flat bottom and won't work in the primer tool. I have to use a newer one.
If you never plan on using the RCBS primer tool you are OK.
