I've been doing some reading through the different threads and keep hearing from people who say they can go to their LGS and find reasonably priced .22 on the shelf with no problem.

I'd like to know exactly what parts of the country people are finding it in. I'm curious if location has something to do with it. I'll get it started.

I live in Central Wisconsin and just went to Scheels to get some because the last time I went there, they had started stocking it again after being totally empty for about a year. They had only Target ammo which cost a minimum of $10 for a box of 50. Today, I went there hoping they got more, and all they had was several boxes of .22 Short black powder rounds  and several more boxes of .22 blanks :barf:

So, no .22 ammo around here! Oh yeah, absolutely nothing at Walmart either.

ATLDave's description of Georgia sounds like what I'm seeing in central Arkansas. You find .22LR in fits and starts. I haven't looked in a while (mainly because I haven't been shooting what I've got), but it doesn't seem nearly as scarce as it was, say, 3 years ago.

Our local Dunhams sporting good chain has had the Rem Thunderbolt 325 packs for about $25, still pretty high, but I bought a couple boxes over the last couple months. I doubt we will ever see 500 round bricks for less than $20 ever again.

In central Louisiana, it's fits and starts as well. Academy has some Aguila in 50-round boxes, but they're very proud of it. Saw some of the new Browning ammo at Academy, but I passed due to cost. I check in with local Wal-Mart every now and then. They get it in on a random basis, and they don't gouge.

Not here. At least not very often. Once a month maybe I will get lucky and see a some on a shelf. Better than once a year like it was not too long ago I guess. It flies off the shelf within hours just like it did then too though.

Dunhams in Stevens Point WI, regularly gets 22LR in. So does Fleet Farm in Stevens Point. The Dunhams here usually sells bulk stuff (Remington Golden Bullet, Winchester etc) for under 6 cents per round. About 5 days ago they had 525 packs of Golden Bullet for $23.50 Do the math. Less than 5 cents per round. Fleet Farm tends to be a little higher. I recently bought a 100 pack of Winchester Super X for $5.99. That is the maximum I would ever pay for 22LR.

Pretty dry in S. CA.

I never see it on the shelves of 2 Wallmarts, 3 Big 5s, 1 Turners, 1 Bass Pro, and 2 Ammo Bros.

Turners maaaay have Ely Match at $10/50

I don't go looking for it anymore; only if I happen to be there. ETA: I get in online.

Gander Mountain and Cabela's have 22LR.
I have had no problem with Gander Mountain, Twinsburgh, Ohio, Dicks in Macedonia, Ohio and even the Walmart in Macedonia, Ohio as far as local brick and mortar. I have been also fortunate at the Cabela's , Columbus, Ohio when we go down there to visit kids and grand kids. I have fared well at the brick and mortars up here throughout the entire fiasco, especially Gander Mountain.

Additionally, I have posted the locations when and where I have bought 22 LR every time I got some.

I see it here and there from time to time but will always throw in a brick of CCI Standard Velocity when I order from Midway or a couple boxes of Federal AutoMatch when I place an order.

It's coming back enough that I can start being picky again.

Be careful of the quality. I've had some BAD stuff, Winchester X IIRC. Or something like that. Can run in a revolver and that's it. YMMV. If it won't run, it's no stinking good to me.

I haven't seen a single box of the stuff at a wal mart, in southern Indiana, since about January of 2013. Occasionally gander mtn, or academy will have some target stuff or aguila and the rural King has aguila for about 5 dollars for 50 rounds. I hear rumors of cci, federal, etc, but I haven't seen a single box of the stuff in about three years.

Fits and starts, like Spats McGee said.

I've seen it on occasion at Walmart, reasonably priced, but the difference is that it sells out within hours of hitting the shelf. Pretty much everything reasonably priced sells out within hours. It's been that way since, oh, November 2008. That's what the sporting goods manager told me, word for word. It was that sudden, like turning off a light switch.

It would be easy to conclude the sky is falling but I don't believe you can use WM for a general indication of availability. WM's buyers simply don't buy anything at all unless they can get it at ridiculously low prices so they can pass that on the their customers, and ammo is no exception. Reasonably priced .22lr is available, but you just have to expand your search beyond Walmart. I used to get a box of .22lr at WM for $1.99. Those days are probably gone, but after all a lot of other things have changed in eight years.

South Central VA - more 22 than you can shake a stick at!

I don't know if it's location - more likely a case of our local "low price" gun shop (no haggle - he just hangs his lowest price on stuff and that's it) buying in such volume that he gets good deals / first offers?

He's been increasingly awash in 22 for the last 4 or more months. I know he started refusing higher priced target ammo quite a while ago - I'd be surprised if he hasn't started refusing conventional 22 along with bricks.

We have another shop that's pretty new - I think he may have problems with suppliers since he's small and new (although some suppliers may move him to the front of the line in order to get another outlet for their product on their feet).

His prices may be slightly higher than our established low cost shop, but he told me the other day he had actually started refusing 22 offers from suppliers.

Neither one of 'em is gouging - the new guy has Gemtech bricks at $49.99 (which I think is Gemtech's MSRP) - the established guy has had Federal AutoMatch on sale for $19.95 for quite a while and still can't get rid of it all.
He's also getting in a regular supply of various CCI flavors, including Standard Velocity 22 bricks ($29.99, $36.99, $39.99, depending on his supplier).

He has a ton of other stuff at lower prices, but I'm usually not interested as I have only certain brands I'm interested in.

I've not seen any at any of the Walmarts in a very long time. But smaller gun shops seem to get it in at times. I can usually find it, although the selection may not be great. The cheap bulk stuff we used to get in 500 round boxes for $20 is not there at any price. Most of what I see is the more expensive target ammo. It ain't cheap, but is priced fairly for what it is.

The bigger stores such as Cabelas seem to get in very large shipments that last for a few weeks, then the shelves are bare for a few weeks. Seems like about 50/50 odds on them having any and when they do they have a lot. I've seen lots of CCI ammo there. The local Academy Sports stores usually have a small selection.

This store is located about an hours drive from me just outside of Atlanta. I make it a point to go in there anytime I'm close by. They have had it sitting on the floors by the pallet stacked 4' high for months. CCI and Norma mostly. I bought 500 rounds of Norma target loads for $49 last week.

Most stores that I visit in north Texas are getting resupplied as quickly as they sell it. Most commonly seen brands are Federal and Remington.

Normally there is none to be found in the big name stores in Southern Indiana. For some reason the LGS has had it. Couple weeks ago Bucks and Jake's even had Federal Auto Match for $20. Found quite a bit of it at LGS in western KY.
I travel some and when I was in San Antonio TX 3 weeks ago and found it every where I looked. The Cabela's in Buda had all kinds of it. I just left the Cabela's in Dundee MI., other than the target stuff they only had just a few boxes Remington 100 round boxes for $10.
It is definitely getting easier to find on store shelves.

I just got a 325 of Federal Auto Match for $19 at a local farm supply store. Gander usually has some. Also Dunhams, a local sports chain had over 4,000 boxes of 50

In San Antonio there hasn't been any problem finding lots of different flavors of .22 at all of the LGSs and ranges that one may visit. Academy is the "big box" store that I can recommend as being constantly stocked with a wide variety of 50 & 100 count boxes priced anywhere from $3-10 based on quality. It's hard to compete with the Internet, though, unless time is of the essence.
