after seeing a certain someones post on here I'm on the market for a ruger mark III and a suppressor for it, but I was wondering which brand or model of silencer has the best db reduction as I figure if I'm going to put 100s of dollars into it might as well do it right.

it can be integral or one that just screws on to the barrel (in which case a pac-lite receiver on it) either way it doesn't matter.
 
Side note.
In my neck of the woods once you own a suppressor (i.e.) $200 tax stamp included if you take it apart, say for cleaning you need a separate stamp for each part.
That is each piece (by law) becomes a suppressor. In some cases the tools used to work on them become individual suppressors and need stamps as well.
Of course these laws are to protect us…

Seriously, once you ahve your suppressor papered, it is no legal fuss to disassemble for cleaning. Now, if you were MAKING suppressor parts, particularly for resale, you could get yourself in trouble.

personally, I've never shot silencers on a .22. If I said that I have I'd be itching for a prison sentence. But I can tell you, a silencer/suppressor with a volume of 300mL will almost eliminate any noise the round has to offer. Except that it is semi-automatic, which will always make it a littl louder than one would hope.

With the mark 3 the only option that seems I can find at this hour is the pistols with integral silencer, as in, not screw on, just a silenced gun.
 
I don't have a nifty tax stamp. thus, the admittance, however false, that I ever had one would be a good way to condemn myself should the ATF ever want to hurt me where it counts.


but do those silencers adapt to the awkward requirements of the ruger mk3?
 
Ahhh ok. That I don't know as I do not have personal experience with a MK III being suppressed.
 
Paladin makes some Rugar Mark II's with an internal silencer. Very nice stuff.

I got to handle a couple of them at a gun store near Wideners in TN, they had two Ruger Mark IIs with a silencer, a stainless and a blued. I think they wanted $1000 for the stainless and $900 for the blued.
 
you can screw any 22 can onto a pac-lite receiver, I've been looking at various options from gemtech, liberty, aac etc. but of course they all claim to be the best, so many choices :p

Rather than an integrated (internal) suppressor for your Ruger Mk III, wouldn't you rather have a screw-on model that you can use on ANY of your (correctly modified) .22 firearms? The NFA ($200) stamp is for the suppressor. It can then be legally mounted to any variety of applications (just a thought).
 
+1. When I get my *suppressor* (just a pet peeve - the proper term is "suppressor" rather than "silencer" - nothing can completely "silence" a gunshot), I'll be getting a non-integral unit.

For one, they're easier to clean than integral units, which in some cases aren't user serviceable at all. At least with most stand-alone cans, you can do the maintenance yourself. With an integral can, if it gets filthy or damaged, your whole setup has to go back to the manufacturer.

For two, just like Ghost Tracker said - why limit yourself to one integrally suppressed firearm, when you can have a stand-alone unit that's compatible with a number of different guns? Variety is the spice of life, after all.
 
Most of todays suppressors are very close to each other in noise reduction. You are talking about 2-3 decibles difference on most of them. If possible try a few different brands as some will sound different even though they have the same decible rating. It has to do with the way the sound pulses go through the baffles. I personally have the Gemtech Outback II and find that it is a good all around can. It is a sealed screw on suppressor. There are many more good companies making suppressors. well this will be the first 22 I'll ever have owned (haven't bought it yet because I found places that will sell them with integral silencers for less then buying them separate should i take that route)

I was concerned more with decibel reduction but if its not that big of a difference I would prefer the pac-lite receiver and add a can preferably something that meets flush with the reciever then as i'll probably just carry it in an open ended holster when i go to the range.

However, there are a lot of good .22LR suppressors. It's really hard to go wrong, and most of them suppress about the same. With subsonic ammunition, they are very quiet.
 
If I may add in my own .02 I will suggest Knights Armorment, they make some really nice suppressors, not so solid form looking, they are welded, but I have seen them in action and they work well.
