I'm looking for some good loads for 230g gold dots in .45ACP. I would prefer a powder that meters well in my Lee pro auto disk but i would settle for anything right now. Thanks

I use the AA book max of AA#5 and the Speer #10 max using WW231. Both work well in my P220 and 1911, and both meter well for me in my RCBS Uniflow and Dillon measure. Been too many years since I used a Lee pro auto disc measure, and wish I could say how well it worked.

I have not loaded GDs, but 7.0gr Power pistol works very well in my Kimber UCII, shooting Win 230gr HPs, and 230gr Zero rn. Both bullets profiles shoot to POA. Cronos at 816fps, out of a 3" barrel, and 875fps out of a 5". PP meters very well through my Pro Auto Disk:)

This is a MAX load.

I have used AA # 5 with 200 Grain Gold Dots and 230 Grain Zeros with good success. I am sure other powders will work well too.

With a Jacketed bullet AA#5, W231, HS-6 and Longshot all work well in a .45 Auto and all will meter well too. AA#5 was specifically designed for the .45 Auto and is probably my favorite in that caliber although I really like W231 and HS-6 with Lead bullets.

Welcome to the forum...

Everybody always says Power Pistol has a lot of flash...I've never found it to be a problem myself and I have done plenty of low light shooting...it does have a bit of flash, but nothing extraordinary.

It meters great in my el cheapo RCBS Uniflow...never off by more than .2, but I'm a perfectionist when it comes to reloading...I weigh every charge (too many years of long range shooting I guess)

I like Power Pistol because it can push heavy bullets fast...real fast...and it fills the case, its the most accurate powder I've tried that can reach the speeds I want with 230 XTP's and Gold Dots out of a 4.25 inch barrel...it does however have a pronounced "bang" and some recoil due to the load density.

I used Power Pistol in my 9mm, medium .357 Magnum and .38 Special +P rounds and found it to be a good powder but the flash was high. (for me) Other than that it is a good powder that does push a bullet fast without excessive pressures. (a lot like Longshot)

excessive pressures

That's another reason I like it...my bullet of choice is the 230 grain XTP, it works equally well for hunting and CCW...but it is one of the bullets that is known for being a little harder to push fast...meaning it does best with powders like Power Pistol if you are trying to push it hard. The Gold Dot is also a bit harder to push than some bullets, not as bad as the XTP, but its still better to use a "forgiving" powder with it in my experience.

I tried Longshot...it did good for accuracy but did not match Power Pistol for speed (in my pistol...a Baer Stinger).

I set out to find a load that would give me the same level of performance that is "normal" for a 5 inch barrel...out of my 4.25 inch barrel.

With 7 grains of Power Pistol...I found it.

230 XTP = 830 fps
230 Gold Dot = 855 fps

The XTP load is a tack driver.

Power Pistol is a very high flash powder and doesn't meter as well as some of the other choices available.

Power Pistol is like sand going through the powder measure, as is HS6. No problems getting consistant drops with either. You do get some flash, on overcast days, but not like me old 357:D

Speer 200 Grain Gold Dots @ 1.215 O.A.L., WLP primers & 9.5 Grs of AA # 5 gave me an Avg 876 FPS from a 3" CDP II & an Avg 919 FPS from a 4" CDP II in upper 90 temps.

I have not shot any 230 Gr Gold Dots, but have had real good luck with the 230 Gr Zero JHP and AA # 5.

This is close to max by Accurates online data.

This load was safe in my guns using my load procedure. Always consult load books before using anyones loads from unknown sources.
