Gentlemen,

I recently traded away my Weatherby MK V (26" barrel) in 300 Weatherby. I am contemplating purchasing a Weatherby Vanguard (24" barrel) in 300 Weatherby. Any thoughts/comments as to differences in velocity or accuracy with the 24" barrel vs 26".
I am recovering from neck surgery so I probably won't be using this until the 2010 hunting season. Most likely on a bull elk hunt I am planning in Idaho's Frank Church Wilderness.

Don't know about the 300 but in the 257 it was only 48 fps. i don't think the game will notice or complain.

Best wishes for a full and quick recovery.

You don't shoot at Boise Rifle & Pistol, do you?

Good to see you're still with us. Here is a link that details (by 2" reductions) the typical effect to velocity:

http://www.loadammo.com/Topics/October05.htm

While they do not have the .300 Wea. Mag listed on this page, the magnums appear to lose 35 to 50 FPS. Ed Weatherby had a post over at www.weatherbynation.com in which he detailed the reduction. I tried to locate the post but was not able. It was less than 50 FPS. If I locate it, I will send the details to you.

The barrel length won't make any difference for accuracy. The velocity won't be much different with like bullet weights either. Usually about 100 fps per inch of barrel. Not enough to worry about. I'd get healthy and then work up a load and sight in.
