I'm running low of 2400. Gee I hate it when that happens! I have RD, 231, HP38, Nitro 100, AA5, Clays, BE. What should I go to? If not listed, what would you recommend? Thanks in advance, catpop

Depends on if you want full house magnum loads or just range target use??

I like HP38./Win231 You can get pleasant loads to shoot but not full magnums.

BE is kinda fast for 357 Mag

Edit: AA 5 would be good also by the burn rate. I have never used it but have used the HP38

Of the 'also have' powders you list, the only one I have had any dealings with is 231/HP38. It is too quick for Magnum use but I have gotten to 1126 FPS before I got into pressures being exhibited. I backed off to 1116 FPS for no pressure signs (that was a 1/2 grain change). No leading with either but I was using the same 240 grain cast lead that I push with 2400 to a bit faster velocities, also with no leading. :)

None of those are really ideal. BE will work with light bullets... and I've heard of people using 231 in magnum cartridges...

Can you find any AA#7? How about Herco or Power Pistol?

800X ought to be good (I haven't tried it) if your powder measure can handle Wheaties. ;)

4.5 grains of Red Dot with a cast 148 grain DEWC in .357 Magnum brass is fun (and cheap) to shoot. And you have some RD.

If you want to load full magnum level loads you will need a slower powder than what is on your list. Either find some more 2400 or try AA9, H110/W296, 300-MP, IMR4227 to name some alternatives.

IMR-4227 is good.

Or if you like em full tilt magnum, jump onto the 296 / H110 band wagon, as I have for decades. Nothing says "magnum" quite like that of a flaming barrel.

I like AA5 as a Unique alternative, but like Gamestalker said, for magnum loads H110/W296 are the cat's meows. I use WC-820, a GI canister grade of 296 that I got from Jeff Bartlett or Pat's Reloading a few years back, but my most used load in the 44 mag is 9 or 10 gr (~1100-1200 fps) of Unique under an RCBS 250 gr Keith-style SWC. The 10 gr is a hot load, but not really "magnum" and has killed more than one deer. AA5 is very similar but is spherical versus flake (meters really well), and when I run across some, I will pick up another pound or two.

The commercial powders in the "real magnum" burn rate range are W296/H110, Accurate #9, Accurate 4100, Alliant Power Pro 300-MP, Ramshot Enforcer and IMR4227 or H4227.

Faster powders like Longshot, A#7, Unique, Universal, AA#5, HS-6 and the like will of course work but not deliver the results 2400 does.

BE and AA 5 are kinda fast for 357 Mag

Most charts I see list AA5 as being slower than 231. From those listed it would be my choice, however I admit to being partial to Accurate Arms handgun powder

I saw both IMR4227 and H110 at the gunshow today, but not a single new can of Alliant powder. Both of them would be good substitutes for 2400.

Yes my bad, the Sun was in my eyes:) You are correct.

I got desperate and started using blue dot for .44 magnum loads. Now, it is the only powder I use for .44.

For .357, I don't typically load full magnum loads but I have had good luck with 300mp on those that I did. The only caveat is that it is extremely cold sensitive in my experience.

No pistol powders have been available locally for quite awhile and rifle powder is getting pretty slim......for a long time we had powder but no primers and now it's the other way around.

I'm not yet close to being in a bind for my old standby powders for .38, .357, 44 Spl. and 44 Mag. and I don't want to get that way.

Yesterday I went in a small store and he had a couple pounds of IMR4227 on the shelf and although I've never used it I bought them both to put back for hard times.......with things as they are now with reloading supplies a person just has to find suitable substitutes for his old favorites.

Flame from the barrel and a hand that feels like you've been catching fastballs with out a mitt.

That's what shooting magnum handguns is all about. If you can still read the headstamp after two loadings you aren't hot enough :) :)

Well, maybe that last is a little much but Flame and Pain are definitely what Magnums are all about :)

I have had good success with the 4227 in both 38spcl and 357mag. I don't load to super hot most of the time. But that is a nice clean burning powder.

Just thought I'd share. BassPro.com has IMR 4227 and TiteWad in stock. Free shipping on $75 or more in purchases. If you have the powder ship to a store, zero shipping charges AND no hazmat fee!

Yes, I know TiteWad is shotgun powder, but it can be used for 9mm & 45 ACP (load data from Hodgdon). There's data out there for other pistol calibers out there as well, although not official.

Another vote for the 231.

While you won't get full tilt, you'll get great loads for little powder.

Good to see ya around , Cat !

More 2400 if you can find it.

Or maybe some Lil Gun, (again if you can find it.)

Someone mentioned AA5 - I've found you need to load near max, or you get a bunch of 1/2 burned or unburned powder.
Not one of my favs.
