I've been looking for a smith and wesson 242 and 296 for some time and ofcourse haven't had much luck unfortunately.

However something funny happened the other day when I showed my wife this picture of a 242.

She took one look at it and declared it the most beautiful handgun she'd ever seen and told me she wanted it (which is fine by me, I'll just carry the 296 for myself:neener:).

I'm concerned though that it may be to much gun for her to shoot at 19oz, what do you guys think?

I think I feel something stirring in my pants. That is absolutely gorgeous. I've got the 340PD and another 7oz of weight probably wouldn't make that much difference, havn't tried 38's yet though.

Well luckily for me my wife is pretty nice and not inexpensive to begin with :p

well crap I won't have the $ for a couple months for it, just 30 days ago I had to pass one up for 450 dollars! It was a depressing day.

From what I hear though its worth every penny.

I got my 296 for $349 NIB almost six years ago - on closeout. Believe me, it isn't the low weight alone that makes the 296 a bouncer - that dimunitive OEM boot grip and hump hurt! At least the 242 has a few ounces and a bit larger grip than my 642, so 158gr +P LHPSWCs should smart less - I'd say go for that 242 for your wife. I passed on one LNIB early in my 296's career here - wish I had that chance again!

Now, if you want to tame the recoil on either, to the point of being absurd, the X-frame .500 Magnum Hogue grips will fit the L-frame 296/242 - they fit K/L/N/X-frames (See below.)! Also, Robert Mika made me pocket holsters for my 296 that will fit ~3/4 of my britches, sporting the OEM boot grip - great grab - the combo isn't that much larger than a 642 so holstered.
