Any suggestions on a .243 opens sights and wood stock for around $500. I know if Remington 700 and Savage 110 had some a while back. Anyone else? Prefer made in America.

The only thing I can think of is a Remington Model 7.

Problem is, for one, it's quite over-budget (Buds has it at $795 + FFL), and 2, an 18" barrel is shorter than I'd want to go for 243. YMMV on that last part.

For a Savage, I'd say keep your eyes open for a Model 11G... wood stock and IIRC 22" barrel. This will probably be on the used rack... probably under budget. Pre-Accutrigger and you get the flat bridge and you have more options for sights.

Henry Single Shot. You'll likely get some decent wood in the bargain. Here's one I bought for the grandson this year. It's a .243. This one is a youth model with shorter stock but standard is available too of course.

That Savage at Nagel's posted by Saiga308 is going to be tough to beat for price point meeting all your criteria and preferences.

Somewhat above your budget, and not made in USA, but brand new with 23.6" barrel and with the timeless controlled round feed Mauser action. Richly traditional satin blued not found in other rifles in this price range today.

Pre-owned models also available on various auction sites. These examples have adjustable double set triggers and Bavarian style stock profiles.

I have one of these in the Interarms Whitworth brand, a 20" barrel full stock (Mannlicher style) carbine. These were also sold in Interarms Mark X brand before Yugoslavia ceased to exist as a country. Here's an example with Monte Carlo style stock, single (probably adjustable) trigger, and scope mounted.

There's also this Webley & Scott Empire rifle (manufactured by Howa, not in USA) to consider that comes with both a wood stock and polymer stock ANIB but no iron sights, you'd have to get a gunsmith to add the iron sights. Use the polymer stock in the field in brush country and keep the wood stock pristine for looks.

243 has been kicking around for a long time. Any cabela's should have a decent selection of nice used ones. There is almost always one at our LGS's in lightly used condition. I dunno why, but when folks are thinning the pile in the safe, the 243 seems to be one to go on the sale pile.

It's a fine cartridge and is in a lot of older rifles. Just keep looking.

Be nice to find a lightly used Savage 99 in 243 :)

A Winchester 88 for under $500?

I haven’t seen an 88 for under 800 unless it had something wrong with it. Even the savage 99’s are getting up there in price.

Just a few weeks ago I won a Savage 99 in 243 from Rock Island for 449 + fees. Came in at a tick over 500 with shipping.

Shot it last weekend very nice...I like it quite a bit.
